Can someone explain to me how a 5dmk3 can focus faster with and 85L?

Outer focus points are lame on the 5dmk2 but center point is as fast as any dlsr. I guess the 5dmk3 ramps up current much more quickly reducing the propagation delay of the electric motor that moves the massive chunk of glass.........(ummmm doubt it LOL).

85L is slow. lensguy when you miss focus and wait for the glass to go from infinity to appropriate location in the lens to get proper focus you'll say oh oh I just missed that shot!!!

85L is pig slow. I love it for what I need to use if for.

It doesn't! Using any of the focus points the time from infinity to MFD and back to infinity is 3.5 seconds on both my 5DmII and 5DmIII. What I have found is that when using the outer focus points on my 5DmIII I get more consistent AF accuracy than with my 5DmII.

The 85L is not an easy lens though. I have mine since about 3 months, but keeper rate is not as high yet as with my other lenses. Autofocus (I use a 5D3) is very slow compared to a 70-200 2.8 IS II. Too slow for moving childred for instance. When working closeby, dof is so shallow that the focus-recompose methods which I've used for years does not give me the sharpness I would like. I'll keep on practising though.

So if I dump my 1DsmkIII and grab a 5DmkIII my 85LmkII will focus faster?
Hogwash...
locking on target and AF speed are two different things...
And if you can't AF with the 85LmkII then try stopping down a little bit, kids start moving, people start jumping around, stop down or back up, just because it doesn't focus as fast as the 70-200's doesn't mean you can't shoot action, it's just more challenging. Which is fun. At least it's not as slow as the 1st version....Which, I shot plenty of moving targets with too.

And......
WTF, the hood is ugly so you won't use it? Are you serious?

The AF is fine for still work and weddings IMO, but I wouldn't want to shoot sports or street photography with it.

my 85 is probably tied with with 70-200 as most used sports lens...
