I would base your choice on your next most likely lens. If you think a 70-200 may be in your future the 24-70L would be a faster lens and give you a very nice pairing. Plus it's more like the 28-70L you were originally going to buy.

I figured a pairing of f2.8 zooms was the classic kit IS or not, you would be hard pressed to have the wrong lens owning such a pair.[/QUOTE]

I already own a 70-200 2,8 :-)

Sorry about that, then you know the value of f2.8 to you so this should be a fairly easy choice then. Big heavy f2.8 or kinda heavy f4.

When I had the chance to use a 28-70/70-200 pairing the 28-70 was my favorite to use. That still holds true with the 24-70L, this lens is an even better jewel for me then the 70-200mm.

I kaNt sPeL...

I am convinced :-)
It`s gonna be 24-70 2,8 - and it will be married to may 70-200 2,8. :-) with a simple seremoni :-)

I will order it tomorrow - and then its starts - the long painful waiting - lol

thanx again.

You won't be sorry. My 24-70 f/2.8 made me sell my 17-40 f/4 so I could buy a 16-35 f/2.8... and now my 70-200 f/4 will probably be replaced by a 70-200 f/2.8 at some point. Tough to resist those fast zooms. :)
