Events will give media passes to people who they feel will give them exposure that is worth more than the cost of admission.

Examples:
newspapers / tv news / print media / online media outlets with large distribution (not a blog or photographer with a flickr account)
photographers actively working with sponsors of the event who are paying to be sponsors
Photographers actively working with event participants who have sponsors or media outlets involved in promoting the event before / during / after the event

If you don't fall into one of these 3 categories, don't expect a media pass.

~ Canon 7d / 5D ~ Novatron strobe setup + Vagabond
~ Some L glass, some flashes, the usual

This ^^^
and this...
If you need to ask the question, you don't need the pass.

PhotosGuy, I like your avitar. The Brownie Hawkey was my very first camara about 40 years ago, I sure wish I knew where it was today.

You build contacts at papers/magazines and they apply for a press pass when they want you to cover an event.
