Hi everyone! I have a vintage Spiratone 400mm f6.3 telephoto lens (plura-coat) from my grandfather (I believe from the 1970s), and I would love to use this on my Canon t3i. I've been reading about a couple of adapters - t mounts as well as t2 mounts. Does anyone know which one would work? Thanks for any tips :)

Probably a t2 mount.

I belive that the T mount and T2 mount are really the same. The only difference is the T2 is adjustable so that you can loosen the 3 screws and rotate the lens in the mount for correct orientation.

Most of these will work for you.... http://www.ebay.ca …=0&_sop=15&_dmd=1&_ipg=50 (external link)

Msowsun, thank you for the explanation and the ebay and wiki links! Someone said that a t-adapter is needed to work in conjunction with a t1/t2 mount, do you know if that's correct?

No... all you need is a EOS/EF T2 (or T1) mount. It's an interchangeable mount system, so no adapter is needed.

P.S. I'd spend the extra for the T-mount with the electronic chip. This allows the camera's Focus Confirmation to work, so long as there is enough light. As you stop the lens down to smaller apertures, your viewfinder will dim down and the light reaching the Focus Confirmation sensor will be reduced in the same manner... At some point FC will not work. Depending upon whether shooting at high Noon on a bright sunny day or in low light, you might be able to use FC to f8, or even f11. But it will fail sooner in lower light situations.

Spiratone aren't the world's best lenses.... Don't expect a whole lot from it. Might be fun, though.

Thanks, I will get that! I appreciate all of the help and I'm so excited to use this lens :)

Thanks again! This should work, right?

I saw some sample images and wasn't too impressed so I'm not expecting much. I think it's more sentimental than anything else. You're right, should be fun to play with!

Yes, that is the right T2 mount.

I have a Spiratone 400 6.3 and it is a pretty good lens considering how cheap they are.

To get good results you should:

1) Use 10x Liveview for focus
2) Use a decent tripod
3) Use remote shutter or 10 second self-timer
4) Shoot in bright sunlight or use high ISO
5) Use f/16 for better sharpness and contrast

Here are some samples from mine with a 7D: (all taken from the same position)

I just bought a Kalimar 500mm for $39.99 on ebay: http://www.ebay.ca …m1439.l2649#ht_500wt_1361 (external link)

I will see which one is better and then probably sell either the 400mm or 500mm.

EDIT: I sold the Spriratone for $60 on Craiglist and kept the Kalimar because it is just a little sharper and has just a little more reach.

Yeah, I checked ebay to sell mine a few years ago (before I had a dslr) and they were selling for peanuts. So glad I held on to it.

Msowson, that's a cool ad - I had only seen page one of that!
