Using a camera such as a Canon G series, the sound level always overwhelms the audio recording, and if fact the music isn't hardly recognizable at all due to the distortion. Has anyone found a way to get around this?

Yep, but you have to use a separate recorder, preamp and mics. Its called Taping, and many concerts will kick you out for it. Check out www.taperssection.com (external link)

Other than that, the mics should tone it down a lot and give you useable audio. I shot quite a few concerts with a point and shoot and had more than decent audio considering. I didnt do anything special, even when right in front of the speakers, just held it an recorded.

That doesn't seem to work for me, the audio is completely distorted.

Maybe its how the G's handle it? I have used my Canon SD1100IS and S95 with similar results. To be honest the SD1100IS performed better too.

Couple of sound examples:
SD1100IS: LINK (external link) LINK (external link) LINK (external link)
S95: LINK (external link) LINK (external link)

Def sound like cheap crap little point shoot cameras, but certainly not overly distorted to the point where its unbearable.
