100-400 rental

Heading for Florida for vacation soon and thinking about renting a 100-400 for shooting birds. Cost for 2 weeks about $165 with insurance. Thought it would be a good way to test drive one before laying out the cash for a new or used one. Worth it ??

That's what I did. I rented for a long weekend to see how I liked it prior to paying out that money. I bought it and enjoy it. I have been using it a lot to shoot butterflies. I have a 60d and I think it is an excellent lens on that camera. I have been using it on a monopod lately. Have fun.

I too rented for 10 days from borrowlenses for ~110. It's worth giving it a shot. It's an awesome lens. Only keep in mind that it does not like any filters; even clear UV filter.

Absolutely worth it; especially at that price

I was looking to to buy that lens, rented it, didnt like the slide zoom. but i always rent a lens and try it out before i buy. and its so much easier to rent then buy. easier on the wallet

Careful Chuck, you may like it.
I loan mine to friend that shoots an old Xsi.
Marriage made in heaven.
He loves the slide tele on it, me not so much.
Getting it back from him is always a battle.

i keep a UV filter on mine. i tested the lens with and without filter and i saw no difference. and what about circular polarizer or ND filter? you saying they can't be used with this lens?

just realize that in the canon realm the 100-400L is one of the most versatile lenses. With this versatility as as a zoom you'll find the IQ to be good....not stellar. This lens loves alot of light.

probably but for birds the 400mm prime is better and cheaper, the 100-400 is more about versatility - wildlife such as birds but also for events, sports, etc.

I totally agree with the two previous statements.

Renting the lens for that amount of money is not a bad idea. Very cost effective.

Thank you DreDaze you just saved me 33 bucks Lens on order. I will post some shots when I return from vacation.

Once you get familiar with it, it can be used in some pretty dim conditions, assuming you have a reasonable top end on your ISO (read: more modern body). I've shot birds, frequently, in the 2500 to 3200 range and been just fine. But getting there took a while; when I first got the lens, I couldn't, for the LIFE of me figure out how to get a reasonable result out of the thing in anything less than direct daylight.

It's all a learning experience; but once you get it down, it's is a fantastic piece of glass.

Of course it takes filters (77 mm thread) I've a 100-400 since 2002 and have been using it always with a b+w UV filter and from time to time with a c-pol as well.

Please explain why you think it can't take filters in your view.
