I'm shooting a half Marathon and full Marathon this weekend for marketing material. Any seasoned running photogs have any tips/advice?

I've been browsing running world and other sites, but not found anything interesting...

I will be taking my 60D, 24-70L, sigma 70-200, 85 1.8 and 2 - 430 exiis.

What type of marketing material do you need to produce?

bring a stool or knee pad --> stay low. I'd be belt high with lens.

Look for clean backgrounds. Around a corner is sometimes helpful since the runners tend to string out instead of a big cluster. Runners will be more spread out later in the course (obviously).

Look for angles with sun behind you. I shot a marathon last year: I set up where the athlete just came over a hill. It was pretty decent location.

Checked out aliengin, great stuff.

Marketing wise, it was more sponsor stations and signage, water stations etc. It was for the race organizers to use in newsletters, website, etc. There was a separate company who had about 6 photogs covering the event for print sales. It ended up being a 5k on Saturday and the 1/2 and full marathons on Sunday. It was exciting for sure. I'd never been to or experienced a large race.

Things went well, I was happy with the performance of my gear including my new sigma 70-200.

Go early and find the right spot. There are bound to be hundreds of photographs there, so you might just be able to slip through without needing a pass, like I did.

Take a bunch of test shots. People will be warming-up before the actual marathon begins, so you should have a bunch of opportunites to photo runners going back and forth.

I agree, search for aliengin. (he's on FB too)

He loves running and has a flair for the more artistic side of shooting that sport.

Here's his page:

Sorry, but this one makes me laugh. #9468 is clearly out of his league. :D

I know, it made me wonder (and laugh a bit) too. Actually this was the first group of marathoners to start, they were the people who had qualified via other marathons (winning) from around the world.
