I know this has been beat to death in older threads, but does anyone have a work around aside from using different software to convert RAW to JPG?

I sent an email to CanonUSA this morning stating problem...I'm running it on W7, 64 bit OS with 24 GB ram...even uninstalled/reinstalled same version and it'll repeatedly give this error until it feels like converting...and forget batch function converting a couple hundred images w/o crashing.

Does this happen every time without fail?

I always open in DPP and immediately tranfer it to photoshop, not doing anything in DPP. Have you tried that?

Not every time...I've done it 5 times with fail and on the 6th it works....I think it works every time (for awhile anyway) on first attempt after a cold/hot boot of the PC. This happens on different W7 machines too.

When using batch convert in DPP, you should choose as a destination folder, a folder that doesn't contain already a jpeg with the same name as one of the converted files.
So, check if the destination folder doesn't contain already some jpeg files.
Be aware that if a folder contains a raw file and jpeg file with the same name, it is possible that you don't see the jpeg file in DPP viewer if you have choosen in the preferences to display only one pic for raw and jpeg files with the same name.
So the best way to check if there are already jpeg files in your destination folder is to do it with windows explorer.

I always batch to an empty folder....when I do a single file it's sometimes to a folder that contains a JPG of the same name I simply want to overwrite..I get the usual "do you want to overwrite" prompt...choose YES and then get the error dialog box instantly.

It's hit or miss...so frustrating!!...I just tried it on a file 3 times and it worked on the 4th...at times I even overwrote the .CR2 file then tried again to convert to JPG and it usually works the very first time...rarely doesn't convert w/o an error, though it did error out just now.

Can you record a video of your manipulation (using this free soft for instance : http://camstudio.org/ (external link)) and post it somewhere ? May be we'll see something that will help us identifying the problem...

Will do...Thanks for the link

Just received a response from Canon asking for a detail of the message, here's the bulk of the message..

"Digital Photo Professional has traditionally been working smoothly on Windows 7 64bit. Do you recall what exactly the error message was? If you receive it again perhaps you could write it down and reply to this email with that message. That would help us better troubleshoot the issue."

Note: I posted this to my host so I wouldn't need to compress it for this forum.

Looks like DPP get an error message from windows that the writing operation can not be done. Too bad that the precise reason of this is not displayed. It may be
. the file is already opened by another application
. problem of access permission
. may be a harddrive problem
...
