Remove that L designation and look what you're getting. A white lens that performs almost exactly the same as a 70-300mm with IS. Look at the lens tests that jojo posted. About the only pro I saw was that corner sharpness was slightly better.

70-300 pros:
-Excellent image quality (barely a difference compared to F4L)
-third generation IS
-Extra 100mm over the F4L
-Lighter and smaller
-$10 cheaper

cons:
-neglegible amount slower. (Having IS means it still wins)
-Corner sharpness is slightly softer than F4L
-Focus might be slower (oh wow....like .1 seconds slower to focus? Who cares.)

Now, if the F4L went down to like $450 I might consider buying it. =)

i think after the initial hoopla people will come to their senses. the 70-200f4 is still the sharpest and has superior build and ring USM.

have you ever tried either lens?

The 70200f4 is undoubtedly a fine lens. But with the introduction of the new 70300IS consumers now have an alternative that rivals it optically and gives you other perks lacking in the L. Things like build, real USM/FTM, and AF speed are innate to the L, and the new 70300IS doesn't give you that. But optically speaking, this 70300IS has gone to a new level than its predecessor could never even dream of. The more I use it myself the more I like it. It really grows on you. Klaus over at photozone did a fine review and his conclusion almost mirrors my own [Italics mine]:

"The performance of the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 USM IS came as a total surprise. Unlike its predecessor the lens is capable to produce a very high performance throughout the zoom range without the significant drop in quality at 300mm typical for most consumer grade lenses in this range. It seems as if the new UD element helps to lift the optical quality significantly. Distortions, CAs as well as vignetting are also very respectable. So in terms of optical quality the EF 70-300mm IS can be almost described as a hidden Canon L lens. As much as it may promise here its build quality remains in line to what you can expect from a consumer grade lens and the small max. aperture is limiting its scope specifically regarding portraits where you seek for a pronounced fore-/background blurr only possible via large apertures (f/2.8 and larger). However, if you're looking for a very good, light-weight tele zoom e.g. for travel photography this lens should be high on your shopping list."

Here's the entire review: http://www.photozone.de …non_70300_456is/index.htm (external link)

It's definitely worthy of consideration, at the very least.

I had the 70-200f4L for about 12 months and it was superb, the focus was super fast and bang on even in poor light, the new 70-300 looks good on paper
but I have never tried one out.:D

Hard choice now, I still like the 70-200 better I think.

Yep, saw that same one on FM forum. Sometimes you find those deals. I bought my Tamron for $230 because the guy "thought" it was soft at 2.8, and no longer had the receipt. Lens was a couple months old, and shooting pictures show it to not be "that" soft at all.

i would definitely recommend the 70-200. I purchased one through the forum a few months back and I love it! Top quality glass, and a real bargain for an 'L' lens.

I love mine as well, but if you are into wild life you will yearn for more reach, so the extra 100mm may come in handy but then again even 300mm is short for wild life.

That being said the 70-200mm f4 is one fine piece of glass.
