New York Trip - lens suggestions

Hello all,
I'm about to travel to New York and need some help with which lenses I must bring with me or buy there.

I had a Canon 60D , canon 18-135 f/3.5-f/5.6, canon 50mm f/1.8 (I also have a macro 100mm but I don't think that's a good option for this travel ). There I'll also buy a 70-200mm f/2.8 II.

I read some posts here and almost everybody suggested 17-55 f/2.8. That's my doubt, I should buy it or maybe my 18-135mm is enough? I don't want to be with more than two lenses (maybe three with my 50mm because it's so small )

For my trip to NY (and more) I bought a 15-85 (lens samples here).
I wouldn't claim it is the best lens out there, but it served me very well for general use and the extra few mm at the wide end outweighed the f/3.5-5.6 aspect. I imagine with the 60Ds higher ISOs you would fare better than me.
2mm doesn't sound much, but when space is tight (in tourist locations) it can make all the different!

It looks to me like the thing you're missing out on is an ultrawide, which would enable you to get impressive perspectives on the tall buildings. There are plenty to choose from, and they're nearly all excellent. The Sigma 10-20 is good value, the Canon 10-22 is excellent quality and flare resistance, and the Sigma 8-16 is the widest of all.

I'm thinking to use the 18-135 as my main lens, for general use, and I liked the idea to buy an wide-angle lens for skyline photos.

i travel to NY every December when had my 60D the 50mm was way too tight but it was essential for night photography, otherwise i used my 18-135, if you don't have a better alternative, just use that.

you want to stay wider, NY is a very tight and congested city.

check out some NYC photos and look at the exif to see the focal ranges of images you may want to replicate.

I loved the 10-22mm when I rented it. However, for skyline photos another option is to stitch a panorama by using the 50mm in portrait orientation. That will require a tripod though...

Agree with the others, NYC is very tight and congested and cannot be shot without a wide angle. For travels I always keep a wide angle with me along with a semi telephoto for when I need the zoom. Seems to have served me well for many trips around the world.

I wouldn't be without my 10-22 in NYC. Definitely my most used lens there.

When I was in NYC last April with my 15-85, I felt I had a pretty good thing going. I definitely never found myself I had had longer, but having had wider lenses might have helped... so, in your case, I might advise a 10-22 like others have, and keep your 18-135.

...your 50mm should be ok for your walk around but you might also find your 18-135 useful between 18-35. try taking pictures inside your garage, that's how tightly packed the buildings are. only my opinion and recommendation, since i live here !

50 will not work for walkaround; too tight. 15-85, or 10-22 with your 18-135. I had a 24 prime, and that was not wide enough sometimes.

I just got back from a trip there...took three lenses, but if I had to choose...10-22 would be the one. No matter if shooting in the city, or the skyline from NJ, it was my favorite. Have a great trip!

when i first started and was on my first trip to nyc i travelled with a 17-85 on a rebel xt and i got most of the shots i wanted

this summer i brought my 17-40. 135L and 50 1.4 on a 5Dii
to be honest i rarely shot at below 24mm.

i wish i still had a 24-104 as im slowly realizing how great of a travel lens it really is. might buy another one

a tripod if you can get away with one, NYC is picky with letting you set them up.

i would caution you against betting to stitch panorama, IN the city there aren't any good opportunities for them, unless you can get away to an open area like in central park or up high, otherwise you need to go wide to get it all in.
