As far as buying in NYC, yes, you can get some deals, especially with used equipment in some of the larger places like B&H, Adorama, etc. But carefully check opening hours, as many of these places are closed after sundown on Friday and on Saturday.

on vacation, I'm a 1 lens type of guy, so my vote would be a 17-5X variant or 15-85. I would never buy the 70-200, way too big and heavy.

If I were going to carry only one lens and one camera, I would probably choose the 15-85mm.

Check B&H and Adorama. They have very limited hours a few days only between now and the 10th Oct.
