From yesterdays game. Considering upgrading my 70-200 f/4 to a 2.8 IS II. Can anyone confirm the AI-Servo would be more responsive with that lens?

These are great. The focus speed of the 70-200 f2.8 II is supposed to be at least as fast as the f4, but I've never compared the two. I have been shooting boys soccer with the 70-200 f2.8 II, and it seems to perform nicely. You're certainly nailing focus with the f4. Are you wanting to shoot at f2.8 and lower ISO or faster shutter speed?

Thanks people.

Sdpirro, I just noticed that my 85 1.8 focuses a lot more continuosly than my 70-200 that seems to focus, stop, focus, stop.

Hi. I have the 70-200mm IS. I never use the IS for sports, it slows down the autofocus, I'm told. If you are only shooting in daylight, probably the f4 is just fine. I bought the IS version before I'd really got into sports pics. If you are shooting kiddies, probably a greater dof is wise anyway, to get them in focus. Do you use AI servo and back-button control?

I've never owned the 70-200 f4 and can't really compare. I did own the 70-200 f2.8 IS I before selling it to get the Mark II version. Focus speed improved with the Mark II version. Unfortunately, I was doing most of my shooting lately with that lens on the 1.4x II and 2x III extenders. Focus is definitely slower when using the extenders. However, depending on the camera body, there's no problem shooting continuous focus at f2.8 and hitting focus. For this picture, I shot at f2.8, 1/1000, with the IS turned off, but it was with the 300 f2.8 lens (in the rain).

I've owned the 70-200/4L and now have the 2.8L - the upgrade won't significantly boost the AI Servo performance on your 5D2. 5D2 AF acquisition and tracking are miserable. Best at center point, but even that's marginal. Upgrading the body to a 5D3 is a 10x improvement in AF.

Great shots Robert. #25 seems like the action was coming toward you.

In regard to focus speed of lenses, I always thought it mostly had to do with the weight of the elements and figured the f/2.8 would be slower than the f/4. For example, my 200L 2.8 focuses faster than my 70-200L 2.8 @ 200mm.

I have a 70-300L which I'm told has the same AF and IS as the 20-200 II. I noticed a significant improvement in focus tracing from the 70-200 f/4. This was on a 5dc. The 70-200 would sometimes pause on a moving target where the 70-300 tracts perfectly.

On a 7d you don't even notice it focusing, the subject is just there.
