I went from 70-200 f4 non-IS (bought $600, sold $600) to the 2.8 non-IS (bought $900, sold $1000) to the newest 2.8 II.
There was a drop in IQ from the f4 to the old 2.8 and a jump up with the new II. Focus with my 1DII and the new lens is quick and tracks very well. As the kiddos get older and play on a larger field the 200 becomes too short. I can imagine with a 5D it would be way short. If you don't need the 2.8 for night or indoor, the f4 is fast, sharp, clear, crisp...
You shoot a lot of people, non action, do you need to upgrade for that? To move into kids playing sports the better upgrade would be a 1D series to drive any of the lenses in your current kit. For action sports, spend $500 on a used 1DmII and you will be better off with your current 70-200f4 than a $1400 upgrade to a 2.8II with your 5D. The 1.3 crop will also work in your favor.

I need a 7D

I hear ya'.

I'm going to give up my 5d in a trade for a 7d. The IQ of the 5d is so nice, but I need the speed. After trying the 7d I had to make the switch. The guy I'm doing the trade with does portraits and weddings. He already has one 5d.

Just like my daddy said, use the right tool for the job.

As focus speed yes, but as quality i don't think so, i am going to give up my 1DIIn, but i will get rid of 30D to get 7D, 1D2n+1Ds2=1DX, i saw the results out from 7D against my 1DmIIn, i really prefer and like that from 7D more.

Some ppl might say it isn't, but i think that 7D is newer technology and better Digic than 1DmIIn, also 18mp, it should have some edges over 1DmII/n, still that 1DII is a capable camera, believe me, if i never use 1D3 and tested my friend's 7D then i may never think to replace/give up my 1D2n sooner or later.

I shoot sports and most of the time i go up to ISO 2000-3200, somehow i don't like 1D2n ISO1600-3200, that 7D high ISO looks a bit finer than that of 1D2n, at lower ISO it may not have huge differences, it is just the taste and how everyone see the results by his/her own eye.

The 1DmII suffers in low light but makes up for it in everything else. Don't let the 8mp worry you. One of my customers prints at 30"x40" no problem. If all you are doing is web and occasional 8x10 the extra pix is just eating computer resources. Check the for sale listings, the 1DmII has sold at $500 and less. Also, the 1DmII is nearing to bottom of the price scale. Buy one today for 500 sell it next year for 400. Buy a 7D today for 1,000 sell next year for 700. All I'm saying is the older 1D body still has its place and deserves consideration.
