I suspect it might be a De Haviland Dominie/Dragon Rapide.

Pagman wrote in post #18406640 (external link)
I think your right mate - Rapide they used to be quite a posh/comfy plane back in the days:-)

P.

It's a de Havilland DH 89A Dragon Rapide, and judging by the colour scheme it is in the colours of the RAF's King's Flight, as it would have been back then in the days of HM King George VI. This might be the same aircraft, in company with a Fox Moth.

Sorry for the absolutely abysmal quality, it was scanned from a 6×4 print, and very heavily cropped. The image was probably taken at the Shuttleworth Collection around 1983 or so.

Oh and for completness there was the DH 84 Dragon which is a quite significantly different aircraft. This is the earlier Dragon.

I actually took my son for his first flight in an aircraft in a Dragon Rapide from RAF Duxford. He was not quite 7 years old at the time. We get out to the aircraft, and him being so small they sit in the seat right behind the pilot, and me, being of the larger persuasion they then direct me to sit in the very back row! Not ideal, but they needed to put the fat bugger close to the CoG. I have to say that my son decided that he would stay and take the trip anyway, and did really enjoy it. It was certainly quite nice for what it was, but as a standard airliner format I would not have called it luxurious. Still I'm sure that this VIP aircraft would have been much nicer inside.

This was a Waco Staggerwing that had just been freshly rebuilt.

Land locked submariner, making do with what I have.
