I just bought a 'Sigmalux' 50 f1.4 which front focuses by +18 (MFA) at very near distances to -5 at long distances. If I bring it for calibration can they fix this?

YES!
I have sent several lenses to Sigma, the 50/1.4, 24-70 IF HSM, etc and all came back PERFECTLY calibrated. And I did NOT send the camera along with it.

It may be even better since you know how much MA is needed...provide that info when you send it in and maybe they will use that for the calibration.

IMHO a well calibrated Sigma(especially- 50/1.4, 85/1.4, 24-70 IF HSM, etc) easily perform as well as, or sometimes/some ways better, than the Canon L equivalent!

Good luck

Its worth sending it in. I sent mine for the focus issues and after sending it in, it was perfect.

This is exactly the behavior that Roger says is "just how it is" with this lens.

For those that had this problem and sent it to Sigma, was the problem fixed? I have a hard time thinking Roger would have made that comment with all the lenses they have and all the lenses that get sent out to the manufactureres for repair if the Sigma 50's were comming back with the AF calibration all peachy perfect.

This is my number one hated lens of all time. I've went through 7 copies over different stages of my life lol...and all of them were bad. Just very bad! Sent 3 copies to Sigma, one time with the camera, and it still was soft. I wanted it to be at least close to the nifty at f/1.8, and they couldn't make it happen.

I am glad I read this thread. Thinking about getting Sigma 50 1.4. But I cannot bear going through all these troubles.

My copy was a DOG. After Sigma had it for a couple of weeks it was transformed into a genuinely wonderful lens.

I bought my copy off a member here, and it's been nothing but fabulous. It stays on my 5d2 75% of the time (with a 24 TS-E taking up the remainder).

my dilemma too...bought a copy when i had my 60D...had problems and long story short over 2 months couldn't get focus problems resolved with sigma (send it back for calibration which came back worse, tried different copies and them saying that it's fine when it's not etc)...ended up selling it couple months ago because i was using my 85 and 30 and hardly the 50mm anyway...but unexpectedly decided to go FF so now i need the 50mm again but don't know if i am game enough to go through that again...so atm stuck with my 50 1.8

i wonder when he wrote that if they were sending lenses to sigma or not still...i read his last repair data report, and it looks like they've hired a staff of technicians to repair lenses in house, so no more trips to the manufacturers

I read that too but it wasn't clear to me if their techs do all repairs now or if some lenses still make their way back to the manufacturer.

I don't understand how a company can send out so many bad lenses that require calibration.. What's up with their quality control process. Do they not test them at all or do they just not care about their brand? :)

in reality it's probably like 1/7 that needs calibration(random number guess from other polls)...that one person makes a lot more noise than the others though

I went through 3 sigma 50's and 4 sigma 30's before I found a good 30 so in my experience it is 1/7 that does NOT need calibration. All of mine had the same strange sliding scale issues you are having except one of the 50's that was perfect up close but could not focus to infinity (like it had a small extension tube or something). Simple MA cannot fix so I just sent them back.

Remember if you send the lens into Sigma it has to be registered and you now own it. Even if it comes back bad a second or third time you own it and are financially out of luck since no-one will pay anything for a bum lens.

I do have to say when I finally got the good Sigma 30 what a wonderful lens it was. Better in my opinion than the 35L and for about 1/3 the price. Just go to a brick and mortar store and try it out before you buy or get from a place that pays for return shipping.
