Thanks for all the input! I'm mainly looking for something to do low light w/o flash and i am not very concerned with all the features that the 1.4 has over the 1.8. The 85 is just too long when sitting at a table, but the 28 isn't anywhere near the bargain, but the 50 is still in an acceptable range for use sitting at a table or in a small area within a restaraunt. I was just wondering how much more light I get with the 1.4 against the 1.8 and if it was significant enough (which it doesn't seem to be) to warrant going after the 1.4 rather than the 1.8.

You might want to consider the Sigma 30 1.4, since you speak about sitting at a table. The 50 1.4 is more around the quality than the 85 1.8.

You'll be happy with either 50, I'm sure.

Did you say inside a restaurant without flash? The 50mm works pretty good for shooting across the table. I know my sig says I have the 1.4 now, but this was taken with the 1.8. Also this is with the 10D and if you have one of the newer gen cameras, you'll easily be able to push more ISO. Not many note this about the 1.4 version is that the focusing ring is much easier to grasp then the 1.8 version which was one of my biggest reasons for upgrading.

One advantage the 50 1.4 has, its more accurate in low light/more consistent and less likely to hunt. Now how often does that happen? I don't know, but if that's not a concern to you, go with the 1.8 if all the other things don't concern you either.

I have the F/1.8, and it does that alot. I'll be getting the F/1.4.
