totally agree that there should be a common standard, I can see one day we won't be allowed any carry-on, but that's another story.

The same airline, on different years, has stated...

  • You should check bags rather than carry it on.
  • You can check bags and it costs you money, even for the first one! (or you can carry it on a save money).
The same airline, at different times, has had each policy. Make up your fool minds, airline execs!

Fat chance the airlines will ever come up with a common standard, if they can't even be consistent from year to year with only their own policy. We now have...
  • 11lb/5kg
  • 12lb
  • 13lb/6Kg
  • 15lb/7Kg
  • 16lb
  • 17lb/8Kg
  • 20lb
  • 22lb/10Kg
  • 26lb
  • 30lb
  • 33lb
  • 40lb/18Kg
  • 51lb

...all as carryon limits on various airlines around the world, and variably enforced in leniency.

The day when there is no carryon is the day the women don't carry handbags, no one carries laptops or tablets or electronic book readers, and lost/stolen/damaged goods claims jump astronomically, for all the electronic gear and photography equipment damaged/stolen in transit in checked luggage.

We (wife and I) are still negotiating about what the trip will entail. I prefer wildlife & nature. She prefers luxury accomodations.
I just ordered a refurbished 7D to use the 100-400L with. Hope to get a FF camera before we go for thw wide angle and walk around chores. Trip should be in North American Spring (Aussie Fall). The D6 should be out by then.

Agree if they do away with carry on it will be hog heaven for thieves and a major headache for the airlines

Looks like your wife will need a Leica, then! You need to look the part :)

You should be fine with your lens choices and 7D, whether you get a full frame or not. If you are going to be shooting landscapes outside major cities, bring some grad ND filters - the daylight can be strong and contrasty down here.

Cheers, Damien

Good choice. Living in NZ & shooting landscapes/nature the 7d is a great body.

I find I only use wider than 16mm for seascapes and the like anyhow, if there is no movement issues you can always shoot more frames and stitch, a lot of NZ landscapes are better shot this way anyhow.

let me know if you want any more specific help! You'll have a blast.

Just a thought MrEworm, when I travel OS with my wife we both have a carry on bag. I take my camera backpack, she takes our books and my overflow stuff above 7kg (inc 13" laptop). That gets most of my gear on board with me and at legal weight. Ancilliary stuff goes into the checked luggage (tripod, remote etc). We use those neck pillows on long flights, but just put them around our necks when checking in to save space in her bag. Then when we get off at the other end I just put it all back into my backpack. Problem solved.

If you travel with books buy a kindle! :D

Also dont expect to find much in the way of high end photography gear in stores here, or at a reasonable price. So bring it.

You will only need tripods typically at dusk/dawn etc as we tend to have nuclear bright days with harsh contrast (depending on when you come over). Bring a polariser!

Nah, gotta be paper Rob. As for buying gear in N.Z. I went into a camera store in Auckland and walked out reeling like a drunken sailor, I couldn't believe how expensive gear was compared to Au or the U.S.

Bunch of comedians you lot. Next you'll be warning them about vicious poisonous Kangaroos and Emus roaming about the streets and shopping centres
