The plastic piece inside the grip where the tripod mount is... Can we trust it on a tripod okay? Cause I'm sure my aftermarket 60D grip is like that and I always had that thing on my tripod..

I use the Vello BG-C9 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark III from B&H

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …o_BG_C9_Battery_Grip.html (external link)

Metal plate inside with a metal tripod piece

Used the grip quite a bit with no problems - joystick is still strong

Vello are usually rebranded Meike or other 3rd party grips.

Adorama sells a viewfinder from Swivi (owned by Carry Speed) but sells it under the brand Flashpoint. The product even says Swivi on it.

If placing on a tripod, I would trust it and it should be fine. It's when the camera is hanging upside down is what scares me.

Oh I see, that makes me feel better ! I don't use a neck strap anymore just the grip's hand strap part.

I use a hand strap (Herringbone Heritage) and sling strap (Carry Speed), holster (Spider Holster) on a Custom SLR M-Plate. All essentially attached to the tripod mount on the grip. $4k worth of gear hanging and if I can spend $4k, I can spend a little more and get OEM. To me, it's sense of security. Luckily, I was able to get the OEM grip for around $200 new.

Much better price than what I paid for OEM when it first came out. I just find myself not using the carry straps anymore but my style has changed since then! I'm with you though I would not skimp on it if it's hanging like that!

The main advantage of the Meike's BG-E11 is hat they have the exact same form factor with the OEM version. Thus it's compatible with most of the L-bracket like from RSS, Kirk or Sunway Photo, because they're all designed for the OEM.
This is the sole reason why I ditched my Pixel's BG-E11 & went to Meike. The L-bracket from Sunway Photo fits nicely on both of my gripped 5D3s.

Moreover you can actually use Meike's battery magazine on the OEM. They are exactly the same shape.
So you can use Meike's battery magazine to hold your LP-E6s & when you're running out of juice, instead of taking out the magazine & swapping the LP-E6s, you can just swap the battery magazine entirely.
It's just like using the battery on a 1D body.

Pixel's BG-E11 on the other hand, have a totally different form factor than the OEM version.
Pixel's battery magazine is also different they won't fit on the OEM version.
And good luck finding a L-bracket that can fit your Pixel's BG-E11.

Has anyone ever received a DOA Meike Grip? Mine was ordered from the Ebay listing and they're saying that if I can return it, they would reimburse me my original paid and shipped price, but not the shipping back (which is ridiculous in itself because I would have to pay 70+ in postage just to send it back). If anyone could direct me on how to fix common connection problems with this grip, that would be greatly appreciated....

We use the Pixel Grips and love them. Build quality was much better than expected. No lockups or restarts. Ergonomics and buttons feel very good. T Had it on since the 3 was released.. Guessing 16-20k clicks. Thus far we've been very impressed.

Same here... less clicks (2 - 3k) with absolutely no issues. The plate looks steel but it's really hard to tell. Could be chromed plastic but I doubt it.

This L-Plate fits the Pixel >>> 5D MkIII L-Plate for Pixel Grip (external link) It's not a RSS, Kirk, or SunWayPhoto L-Plate but it does fit and it does work... although it's not optimal.

I'm going to buy the Canon BG-E11 and an RSS L-Plate and be done with it... if I can get a decent deal on them used that is... hint... hint...

I have a Meike grip for my t2i. It has been great for the 2 years I've owned it. As for the quality on a newer grip I could not speak of but when I buy my 5dmkii I will be looking into the cheaper versions of the grips rather than the Canon one. The Meike has been reliable for me and the t2i.

Dave, is that bottom plate that surrounds the tripod receiver made of plastic or metal? Looks like it may be plastic...
