Depends what you're shooting, compared to previous option of needing a 1 series, it's a bargain. Minor DR difference isn't everything for everyone (As evidenced by photofocus picking 5DmkIII as 'camera of the year', though mostly for birding performance). Amazing how much despair a lab benchmark (read: not real world) can create.

Yes, but the 5D3 isn't just compared to the 1 series - it competes with the D800 (even though, granted, they're both well suited to slightly different applications).

As for "lab" and "not real world" - I'd suggest having a play with some Canon raws vs. Nikon raws. Believe me; it's very much real world. E.g. http://www.fredmiranda.com …dex_controlled-tests.html (external link)

Not a good progress. It's seems there's a Noink mole working at the upper echelons of Canon! :D

Darth Mole! ;)

I wouldn't be surprised to see 100->1600 as a valid range without noticing on a new FF sensor without a market image quality hit.

If you don't see any difference between ISO 100 and 1600 in your photos then you certainly aren't looking at them enough. DR goes down quite a bit at ISO 1600.

I'm talking on a *new* sensor; and they can do tricks like; say; iso blending to minimize noise. And also; it would be pixel/pixel; so DR doesn't really matter much.

Must see this new sensor, because on my 5DII I can see the difference between 100 and 200 ISO without even trying, 800 is my personal limit because the noise gets so bad above that and even thats only in extreme cases. I'd love Canon to lower the ISO to 12.5 or 25.

But now Sony and Nikon have demonstrated that we don't have to live with noise, be it pattern or otherwise, Canon hopefully will start producing similar (and better?) sensors.

If you're limit on previous gen is 800; i would think 1600 on new would be conservative then. I''ve heard wonders about 5d MKIII ISO performance; would love to shoot one for a while to see where i'd be comfortable... (~1600 tends to be my limit on my crop, LR4 NR is nice)
