"Is it possible to shoot faster than 1/200 while using a 430exII flash?"

I was just wondering if there was a way around this, and how. To be honest, I've had my camera about 9 months now, but there's still a lot of the 'technical' stuff that befuddles me.

Thanks,

~Ace

That would have to do with your cameras sync speed. On the T3i it is 1/200. On others it is a little faster, or a little slower. you can shoot in High Speed Sync(HSS), and that should allow you to shoot faster, but you are going to lose power when you do that. Watch this video. It should help.

P16 of the 430 EX II manual explains how to use High Speed Synch, which is what you need:

HSS loses some flash power but not so much it becomes a problem. It will go through batteries a bit quicker though.

Wow, thanks! I looked through the manual when I got it, then put it in the box & stored it away. I guess that's where I should've checked first.

Thanks again!!!

You actually loose quite a bit of power going into HSS, 2.5 to 3 stops of power.

+1. And the more you increase the shutter speed, the more flash power you lose.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

Kinda hard to look it up in the manual when you don't know what it's called!

You're welcome. Let us know how it works for you.

Or you could just go to the Canon site and download pdf's for all the kit you have .. it's easier to just 'scan' thru pdf's when you need an answer.

And for the purists among us, it saves opening up the manual and messing it up :)

And now you can have it on your smartphone.

No you don't. You lose about a stop of power switching to HSS, but after that you are able to use a wider aperture with the faster shutter speed, so it balances out.

The real purists don't even get the camera out of the box...
