Recently purchased the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. I'm loving it but the Color Fringing is killing me. f1.4 is useless. and even up to f11 its noticeable. Is it Me or my Lens? I never really dealt with this before. I have the 50mm 1.8 and it barely has Color Fringing, So maybe i'm just not used to it? To me though, It just doesn't look right. It's too Soft.

Click the Pictures so you can see the Color Fringing.

f2.8

I think you are doing too much pixel peeping, colour fringing in both examples you provide are very low. I downloaded the raw version of the wine bottle pic and couldn't see much wrong with it. If it worries you that much then process your raw pics with DPP and use canon's lens correction profiles to remove the fringing.

As for the 1.4 being soft, yes it is soft when wide open but so is every other large aperture lens and your lens is probably no different to any other canon 50 1.4.

I did notice that when I loaded your wine bottle pic into DPP that the sliders were all over the place including sharpening which was set quite high. I would suggest using an in camera profile that sets all options to zero when you are using raw files and apply very little little (if any) sharpening at the raw stage.

Stop worrying about minor technicalities that aren't really going to show in a normal sized print and enjoy the picture making side of your hobby. You've got some decent gear go out and use it.

The picture of the cat isn't soft at all, look at his fur at the point of focus.

It's just a the depth of field is shallow, so if you look at out of focus area, it looks blurry.

I see the red on the wine on the right hand side and green on the cat in the white neckline, again on the right. That's as the images sit and I view them on my iPhone. Am I correct?

Not sure what to do about it, Lightroom has a correction tool but I am guessing you want a fix, not sure there is a quick fix.

I see the red on the wine on the right hand side

that looks like a specular reflection of something red back there, since it does not appear on the label.

I wouldn't say there's much wrong w/ the shots, but yea if you're pixel peeping you can see the color fringing.. Shots are fine otherwise

I see nothing on the wine bottle shot and a TAD of green fringing on edge of cat's fur. There IS however, green to the right of the cat that could be casting some color.

If it's quarter inch purple fringing, I could see your point, but what you've shown is negligible at best.

I see the red reflection on the edge of both wine bottles. I'll take it as reflected color, and not fringing. I can't say whether the green edge on the neckline of the cat is fringe either.

There is some slight green on the neckline of the cat, nothing major. On the wine bottles, i cant find it, i think you worry way to much, they both look fine in my eyes.

I Shoot RAW and convert to JPEG through Photoshop Image Processor. I didn't do any sharpening and my Picture profiles on the Camera have Sharpening all the way down.
