I am planning to purchase a better zoom lens or prime lens for photographing wildlife and birds. I prefer to hand hold the camera but I do have a monopod that I use at times. I don't want something that is extremely heavy and do not want to spend more than $1600.I have read thread after thread comparing the 70-300 L, 400mm 5.6 L, and the Canon 100-400mm L. I wish the decision was easier!! I don't plan to purchase until after the new year unless I find a really good sale, so I have a little longer to think about it. A few of you have your lenses listed in your signature but some do not. Does anyone use the Canon 400mm L handheld or is the IS a must for handheld? Sorry if this has been asked a number of times. I looked through quite a few pages in this thread but didn't see what I was looking for. I would have asked in a different thread but I would really like the ladies advice... Canon 7d mark ii || Canon 70d || Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM ||Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS || Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro || Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 || Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM || Yongnuo YN-565 EX II || Canon Speedlite 430 EX ii ||Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD

In my opinion, yes, IS is a must when hand holding one of those lenses. You may be able to get acceptable photos hand holding if the shutter speed is fairly high. BUT, it's preferable to get best photos if you use a tripod. If you really prefer hand held then I highly recommend IS. I use the 100-400 and really the IS is something I couldn't live without. Even when using high shutter speed. I hate using a tripod myself, but will if I have to. Paula

It takes a bit of practice, but I'm having no problems with it. And if light gets too low use a monopod, tripod or a nearby tree or fence or whatever is around to brace yourself with. Is IS nice to have? Sure. Is it necessary? Nope, not for me it isn't. The 400/5.6 is an amazing lens for birds and the best one for it in that price range. It's lightweight, has very fast AF and is very sharp. Wild Birds of Europe

I absolutely love that lens and am so glad I bought it. Penelope Malby Photography

MaureenSouza Ms. MODERATOR Something Spectacular! More info | I use a handheld 300mm f/4 lens (& add a 1.4 teleconverter) with sharp results. I have never used it on a tripod. We do own a 100-400mm lens but I am a Prime lover so I never use the 100-400. Image hosted by forum (667636) © Maureen Souza [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Nov 10, 2013 06:13 | #3101 Hi, Ladies! Mind if I join this thread? Although I have been a POTN member for nearly four years, I have just found this thread and am so glad that I did! Lately I have been discouraged, thinking of selling my gear and going simple, only because this is my hobby and I feel as if my equipment is way better than what I am capable of. Finding this thread has renewed my spirit, and I will try to continue to grow into my equipment. Robin
