That's lovely Kaitlin, I can't remember seeing it either.

This week my senior hound Digby turned 13 - a pic from our walk last week.

Thanks Stina, I always love the fact he matches the autumn colours, I have pics where he nearly disappears in the fallen leaves.

Beautiful work in this thread ladies! Penelope your wildlife photos are amazing! I am planning to purchase a better zoom lens or prime lens for photographing wildlife and birds. I prefer to hand hold the camera but I do have a monopod that I use at times. I don't want something that is extremely heavy and do not want to spend more than $1600.I have read thread after thread comparing the 70-300 L, 400mm 5.6 L, and the Canon 100-400mm L. I wish the decision was easier!! I don't plan to purchase until after the new year unless I find a really good sale, so I have a little longer to think about it. A few of you have your lenses listed in your signature but some do not. Does anyone use the Canon 400mm L handheld or is the IS a must for handheld? Sorry if this has been asked a number of times. I looked through quite a few pages in this thread but didn't see what I was looking for. I would have asked in a different thread but I would really like the ladies advice...

Welcome, Belinda. In my opinion, yes, IS is a must when hand holding one of those lenses. You may be able to get acceptable photos hand holding if the shutter speed is fairly high. BUT, it's preferable to get best photos if you use a tripod. If you really prefer hand held then I highly recommend IS. I use the 100-400 and really the IS is something I couldn't live without. Even when using high shutter speed. I hate using a tripod myself, but will if I have to.

I use the 400/5.6 handheld most of the time and get sharp results. It takes a bit of practice, but I'm having no problems with it. And if light gets too low use a monopod, tripod or a nearby tree or fence or whatever is around to brace yourself with. Is IS nice to have? Sure. Is it necessary? Nope, not for me it isn't. The 400/5.6 is an amazing lens for birds and the best one for it in that price range. It's lightweight, has very fast AF and is very sharp.

Ditto ^. It's what I use for all my wildlife shots nowadays. Most of those deer ones were taken using a monopod to help too. I absolutely love that lens and am so glad I bought it.

I use a handheld 300mm f/4 lens (& add a 1.4 teleconverter) with sharp results. I have never used it on a tripod. We do own a 100-400mm lens but I am a Prime lover so I never use the 100-400.

I finished working up the Paris photos; I think most of the days the skies & lighting were gloomy but despite that, I am pretty happy with how they came out. When we took our day trip out to Mont St. Michel, it drizzled all day & when we got there, the Abbey was covered in clouds so I thought I would not get any pictures. Fortunately, after lunch, the clouds blew through & while it stayed very overcast, I was able to get some shots of the whole thing.

Hi, Ladies! Mind if I join this thread? Although I have been a POTN member for nearly four years, I have just found this thread and am so glad that I did! Lately I have been discouraged, thinking of selling my gear and going simple, only because this is my hobby and I feel as if my equipment is way better than what I am capable of. Finding this thread has renewed my spirit, and I will try to continue to grow into my equipment.

I will be 60 years old at the end of this year and retired just a few months ago. I was accounting supervisor for our local telephone company and love being retired. I have 3 grown sons, 6 grandchildren, and four step grandchildren.

My passion for photography has evolved over the years, always upgrading my P&S cameras and wanting better until I discovered the world of DSLR. Now I am hooked. I do digital scrapbooking and am always working on pictures.

Anyway, in the next few days I will be reading much of this thread and getting familiar with all. Thanks for renewing my spirit, I needed it.
I love photographing family events, landscapes, barns, birds and local wildlife. This past year I got my first eagle shots and was thrilled.

Nice. I am in Grand Haven and did a shoot in Kalamazoo last week. We're almost neighbors.;)
