My husband and I are an exception. When we're in an unfamiliar place, I can more easily figure out how to get back to a starting point. It must have to do with creating an approximate map in one's head. Wherever I am, I want to know which way the cardinal directions are. That probably came from my father, who oriented himself the same way.

I have to marvel at birds. They have one additional dimension to navigate through. Not just which tree their nest is in, but how high in the tree the nest is.

My husband is a retired cop so I always figured he could navigate anywhere. Then we went to New York City a couple of years ago & he was so mixed up & lost the whole time but I was acclimated in about an hour. He kept asking me how I knew where to go & how to get places; it was really funny. I figured Paris out the first afternoon we were there as well. So I guess I was born with a good sense of direction; I remember telling my mom how to get places shortly after we moved from the East coast to California & I was only 8 years old.

Maureen, you had a better experience in New York than I did. I went there once for ten days. I was turned around the whole time. The plane took a curved course when preparing to land, which mixed me up. Then the ocean was always on the wrong side!

Lol! When I picked our hotel, I had a big map of Manhattan in front of me so I had a good layout of the main streets, Time Square etc. when we got there. We stayed about a block from the Empire State bldg so it was easy for me to get around.
We are getting our first rain of the year & so thankful for every drop. Hope this is just the beginning of a decent wet winter as our farmers really need it. Last decent rains were 3 years ago!

That made me laugh, but it also makes perfect sense to me, OhLook. It's like having a map in your head and then suddenly reality not matching that. Strangely enough I am a great map reader and have a great sense of dimensions (I know when something fits and when not almost to the millimeter!). Probably compensation for the other thing... :D

Love the senior boy photo Maureen, the background is great.

The BBC nature folk got in touch via Flickr - one of my pics is here - the badger one

I've been busy with dogs in my studio. A Swiss Entleboucher (yes I had never heard of them either!) on Weds and yesterday Emma (Digsmum) brought her two ADORABLE long haired mini dachs on Thursday. All very well behaved and a pleasure to work with.

This is Basil, he's so funny, very suspicious of me until I had treats to feed him!

Ferocious windstorm in the Bay Area last night. We have damage in the garden. I came in from cleaning up some and found that the wind caused two deaths. Worse than I could tell from here!

Great doggie pics Penel! You've got a way with the Pups. Basil has the best expression!

OhLook. Glad to hear you are safe. Hope that wind storm blows itself out before it gets to SoCal. We get enough wind on our own!

Thanks Penel, well done on the BBC pic. Also thanks for showing me how it all works in your studio and taking such great shots.

It is pleasant change to see Basil so clean in photos. A few days previously in Norfolk ....

we had a lovely weekend and saw amazing numbers of birds. This was a mixture of geese and lapwings coming inland in the morning - I have never seen so many birds.

The weather seems to be getting more extreme in lots of places at the moment, glad you are safe.

Emma, LOVE the last shot. It must be great seeing that one large.

Thanks Levina, it doesn't really show just how many birds there were but it was the best I could do. We would walk to the beach and there would be wave after wave of birds coming in - that was the biggest I saw that I could get in one shot but they had been coming in for over half an hour before. Just amazing to see.

Oh, I think the pic gives a fairly good idea about the number of birds there. You only get those long swirls when there are a great number of birds in the sky. And I just think it's a great pic. And on a screen the image is small, but printed large I'm sure it would look great!

Wow that's fabulous Emma - I know that sight in Norfolk - the skies are so big and there can be so many birds all together!
Love the sandy Basil pic too, he's a cheeky monkey!
