My husband and I are an exception. When we're in an unfamiliar place, I can more easily figure out how to get back to a starting point. It must have to do with creating an approximate map in one's head. Wherever I am, I want to know which way the cardinal directions are. That probably came from my father, who oriented himself the same way.
I have to marvel at birds. They have one additional dimension to navigate through. Not just which tree their nest is in, but how high in the tree the nest is.
My husband is a retired cop so I always figured he could navigate anywhere. Then we went to New York City a couple of years ago & he was so mixed up & lost the whole time but I was acclimated in about an hour. He kept asking me how I knew where to go & how to get places; it was really funny. I figured Paris out the first afternoon we were there as well. So I guess I was born with a good sense of direction; I remember telling my mom how to get places shortly after we moved from the East coast to California & I was only 8 years old.
