OMG. The 1D III arrived just now. I had missed the postman this morning and track&trace said it would now be delivered next Monday 30 Dec. But my postman lives close by and he usually tries at the end of his rounds and on his way home if I'm home now, and I hoped he would this time too. And he did!!

I am in a state of shock!!! The shop said it was in mint condition. Well, that was an understatement! It looks brand new, as in never used, as in straight from the factory. Every little thing is in the box, and all in the original plastic and fine paper bags, many still sealed. Manuals that look like they were never opened. I mean, this thing is truly incredible. The battery was half full (so the thing must have been used!) and is now charging.
Of course I still have to test it, but WOW!
I am really happy with this.

Is that 5? (a day care if they all were not related somehow! ) How in the world did that perfect storm come together?

Sad story. My son-in-law's sister-in law died from breast cancer this past week at age 33 after a 3 year battle. She was a beautiful, sweet girl and we are all very saddened by her passing. I volunteered to take babies/kids for my daughter, her sister in law and another family cousin who were all attending the service. It went pretty well; a few moments of screaming baby & one temper tantrum from one of the 3 year old twins but the rest of the day was chaotically fun. I had a blast with them all. Here is a photo I took of Sarah with her niece August 2012:

Can't wait to hear how you like it & see some photos. It is always fun to get a new toy. My 7D and the 100-400mm lens are going up for sale today, then I am buying a
2nd 5DIII body :)

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

We are all heartsick over the loss; she put up such a brave fight so certain she would beat it.

Now I am sick about my Epson 2440 Stylus printer. It is broken!!! Skip & I have run all the troubleshooting cleanings, maintenance, adjustments, uninstalled & re-installed it and the prints remain way off. There is no repair place with 200 miles of me either so now I am uncertain about what to do......

A sad story, Maureen. My condolences with your loss. Breast cancer still kills too many young women.

It seems hardly fitting to now say that it's early in the morning here and that I am going out with the new camera and find that duck Joayne was talking about.

Hi everybody!
Well, I went out with the new camera today. Early in the morning, good light, AF locked on very quick but I am looking at the pics right now and I am not happy. Nothing is really sharp and I don't know why this is so. I always look at my pics at 100% and anything that isn't sharp is trashed. This means basically that of 400 images not one is a keeper today. Maybe I can find 3 or 4 that might pass inspection, but even then, they just don't have that sharp quality that I am looking for and that the 40D, the 5D and the 1D II N give me. Something is not right here.
There is also something about the sound of the shutter when firing a burst that sounds off somehow, like there is an after sound that shouldn't be there. I shot with a 1D3 two years ago for a week and that one sounded very different, like a smooth, rattling machine gun. Not this one.
So I don't know...

Use that warranty Levina!
Hope it works out. Such a shame to look forward something and be disappointed :(

Yeah, disappointing indeed, Jo. I will go out again hopefully tomorrow, weather permitting (forecast is rain, rain and more rain for the entire week) and try again. I have checked every setting and I can't find anything wrong in there.
As to the warranty, well, I bought it but as I did so online, I can return it within 14 days, no questions asked. If after the second outing I still have these results, I'm sending the thing right back and get my money back.
I did have a response to my ad for the Mk II N today though, so who knows, I may find myself shooting birds with the 5D again next week! :) I wouldn't mind that though. I mean, it's a bit of a struggle as the shutter lag on the 5D is a real problem and of course AF is not too fast, but if it all works the images sure look sweet! :) Or maybe I should just give up the idea of a new camera for now and keep the Mk II N.
I'm not deciding until after I've taken the Mk III out again.

Grrr...

Thanks, Penel!

Jo, I love you for saying that because I think you actually mean that, but I still got a 40D myself! :p :D I can always use that for a while if I have to. And there are other used 1D3's around. So if this one is a bad copy, then so be it, I'll return it and look out for another one.

You know, I was thinking that maybe the camera and the 300/4 that I used today didn't work well together. So tomorrow I will take the 400/5.6 and see if that makes a difference.

There is the micro-adjusting software that is used by many here.. FoCal (external link)
I've seen many people solve a lot of focus problems between camera and lenses..and the Thread
Perhaps there is help ...

... but if the shutter sounds dodgy *shrug*

Levina - did you check that the 1D3 had the focus fix? There was a problem with the early (and middle . . . ) bodies autofocus that seemed to sting birders the worst. Canon (eventually) offered a service-center fix that seemed to handle most of the issues; mine was a later release and didn't give me any troubles that I noticed (birds and aircraft were the prime subjects) before I moved on to the 7D (compact size and common batteries are a major concern in my gear selection; 5D2, now 5D3, and 7D gave me what I needed for the Galapagos and beyond).
