Would you chose the

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM Lens

or
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

and I thought I would chuck this one in for fun
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

I know one is better for wide angles etc one has a bigger zoom but if you had to choose one what would it be and why, 1st two are both around the same price and the 3rd one is a bit cheaper but with higher F stop.

All of them are pretty darn sharp. It's more up to what focal length you desire. You can't go wrong either of the 3.

The 24-70 is more versatile and the sharpest in my opinion.

Mark, it's only more versatile depending upon what you shoot. :)

It'd be close, but I'd still take the 24-70. Or the 28/1.8. :)

Based on the first question I would take the 24-70 without much thought for the other two choices.

Your qualifier (quoted above) makes the choice more ambiguous and I would think a case could be made, based on lens specs alone, that the 16-35 would perform better at 30mm than the 24-70. Having said that I would still take the 24-70!
