So... how bad is the AF noise of the 35mm f/2?

It's a prime I'm strongly considering as I'd like the wider focal length for indoor usage (I have a crop sensor camera) and it's fairly cheap.

The only hesitation I have is the reportedly loud and annoying AF noise. How bad do you find the noise to be for everyday usage?

Do any owners also have the 50mm 1.8? The AF on that thing isn't exactly quiet but I find that perfectly acceptable personally. Is the 35mm comparable to that, or is the noise louder/ worse?

It's quieter than a Tamron 17-50 or 28-75, probably close to the 50 1.8. Makes you realize how quiet USM is though.

Honestly you barely hear it. If you think autofocus is loud youve got insane hearing. The shutter is 3x loud in most situations anyway

The ONLY time it seems loud is in situations like a quiet church, in which case the AF sound is definitely more distracting than a shutter, even if the shutter may be louder.

I'd say that the shutter sound from a rebel is quieter, while the shutter from a 5d is louder than the 35's AF.

when i was sitting and shooting, most of the time the ambient noise is so loud that you cant hear the lens anyways

If you're coming to this lens after having used latter-generation lenses, it definitely will seem 'noisy' - for me, using it side by side with my Tamron 17-50 meant that it was a competition as to which was noisier. But you get used to it in the long run :)

It's probably the loudest among the loud lenses, 50 1.8, tammy 17-50... not that it's such a deal breaker, but at a quiet place, it will stand out.

I own this lens, its a real stunner on crop bodies.

The af noise is quieter but slightly higher pitched than the 50 f1.8.

The thing is, this lens focuses much more quickly than any of the 50mm canons. So the noise is hardly noticible, it just goes "zzzzip" and it's locked on. Unlike the back and fourth hunting of my 1.8
