Just returned my Sigma 30/1.4 because it was soft. Sigma4Less took it back (with some unopened filters) no problems, per their policy and offered to replace and I was sorry to decline. Since I was counting on using it this weekend, when I'm going away with family. I now need a fast, normal lens for my Rebel by Friday and whichever way I go I'll have it shipped overnight to my hotel. Some on this forum who like the Sigma 30 a lot admit that it can take a few tries before getting a sharp copy. I'm gravitating back to Canon since this is a hassle I don't want to deal with again. Aside from the EF 35/1.4 L, which I'm unsuccessfully trying to justify to myself, there are the 28mm f/1.8, 28mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2 and the 24mm f/2.8.

The 35 L is almost out of the question, but I'm still thinking on it. In a more economical vein, since speed is what I need, do I go with the 35? At f/2 max it is still fast. The others are better focal lengths for my purposes which will also allow faster hand-held shutter speeds (time = 2 X focal length). It really seems that the 28/1.8 might be the one. The focal length is a bit more different than my 50 than the 35 would be. I'd appreciate comments from any who know these lenses.

BTW, how much faster is f/1.4 over f/1.8, and f/1.8 over f/2, anyway?

40D, Digital Rebel 300D; EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS, EF 28-135 IS, EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro, 85mm f/1.8, 28mm f/1.8, Speedlite 380 EX, Sekonic L758DR w/target, Manfrotto 3021 w/3030 pan-tilt head & quick release plate, POTN Strap

It's one full stop between f/1.4 and f/2 and between f/2 and f/2.8
f/1.4 is 2/3 stop faster than f/1.8, f/1.8 is 1/3 stop faster than f/2

All the lenses you list are similar in design and quality though the 35/2 generally gets great reviews
apart from the noisy focus motor. I have not used any of them though.
