Any of you Canon shooters also shooting the D600? What do you think?

I've looked at adding Nikon to my arsenal before and now the D600 sure makes it tempting. It sure seems like a lot of camera for the money.

I'm not talking of totally jumping ship here but maybe the D600 and a Nikon walkaround lens.

For FF the 5DMKIII is attractive but way over priced to my way of thinking. And the 6D, what's up with that? Why spend that kind of money on a camera that spec's out like the 6D does??

I've been a Canon guy for a long time, my gearlist shows that. But it appears Nikon got the jump on Canon when it comes to the recent FF cameras.

Thoughts?

:)

Yeah.....the $5000 bloodbath I'd take on lenses makes the price of the 5D3 seem reasonable to me. And I don't see owning yet another system as a great move on cost. I mean, so say the 5D3 is too expensive and then add a camera and lens alongside the Canon stuff I have would be kind of bizarre.

And to be honest (I know this is a D600 thread, but anyway) I regard the feature set of the 5D3 as more appealing than the D800. I don't want more pixels, and I only slightly want more DR (I tend to increase contrast in most things I shoot during PP). For what I shoot, the AF system of the 5D3 is better than the Nikon D600/D800 offerings and the blackout / burst is more usable.

I'm also finding a lot of situations in shooting my kids stuff where I appreciate the dead quiet "Silent Mode" of the 5D3. Very nice unexpected feature.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

I am with Jeffrey but that doesn't mean you should not get another system. To me it just doesn't make sense. The camera is a tool and if the tool you have just won't do the job then get new one that will. I shoot and love both my 5D and 5D2. They still meet all my requirement. Changing camera will not help me improve my art.

I've been itching to go Full Frame, and folks have suggested I take a look at the D600 and that, I wouldnt do bad switching (Itd probubly end up a wash) but I cant help but feel its hasty or impatient to do so

Dont get me wrong, the D600 looks great... But... I dunno

I consider my FF options, Right now I can do a 5DII, a 6D or a D600..

The 5DII is proven, it still has great IQ, but the AF system bugs me, All I think of is my 30D, and I never really liked the AF in the 30D..

The 6D is an unknown, I've heard good things about the AF, but its not out yet

Either way i lose my flash commander, which i find is very handy to have, So I'd have to buy an ST-E2 or whatever to get that ability back

The D600 is more compelling of an option, But I have to sell all my glass and buy all new glass, And would that new glass be any better? Well the 28mm f/1.8 would be, But the rest of its a wash (I'd also get a 80-200 f/2.8, But I could simply trade my 70-200 f/4L IS for a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 OS or a Canon 70-200 f/2.8L if i was so keen on that idea)

Do I care about high ISO performance? Not really, I rarely go above 1600 because i dont need to very often, Do I care about banding? Not really, I dont do much where im pushing my shadows the way some people have to for their work..

But that said it comes back to something, The three choices above are what I could do now, but if i had to choose any of the FF DSLRs out there, Id take a 5DIII, I cant explain exactly what it is about the 5DIII that calls to me, maybe its because its a digital version of the best camera I ever owned, my EOS 3.. Maybe because i dont feel like im compromising on anything just to do it -now-

Or maybe im being stupid... you tell me ;)

I don't think the 5d3 at $2800 is overpriced anymore. IMO it certainly was at 3500 LOL.

Agree with drive75 completely, which is why I stopped being so concerned with the paper specs. I see people with Rebels, m4/3, and phone cameras make amazing images without the benefit of eye popping paper specs. I take a trip through 500px, flickr, etc any time I get the "I NEED a better, more expensive camera to make better images" bug and get slapped back to reality quickly...and thankfully :)

Where can you get the 5D3 for $2,800? Am I missing something here?

The 5D3 has been going up for $2800 a few times from reputable places...

I've aquired the D600 and so far I'm very pleased with it. Here are some ISO samples from ISO 1600 all the up to ISO 25600. The sensor is really that good. I will be testing DR too but, I'm positive it will be very close to performance of my D800. :)

I suggest waiting for the 6d just to see. Sometimes the paper specs don't fully represent the product. On paper apart from fps the Nikon d800 mashes the 5d iii but in real usage the canon seems very liked by its users. That's not knocking Nikon, its a fab camera also but the 6d will surface very soon so its worth waiting imo

Sometime soon I am going to go ff and as much as I do not want to sell off and go Nikon,i would be foolish to not be considering it. J dizzle's thread is pretty compelling. I was trying to figure out their lens lineup and some looked expensive and not as extensive, like their 17-40 equivilant is $1200, but has IS. Although with iso clarity like that, who needs IS?

Everything is relative.
Gear: 6D, Unholy Trinity:twisted: (24Lii, sigma 50A, 135L), and for the other ends of the spectrum, sigmaEX 14mm2.8 and sigmaEX 100-300F4.

I had thought of the D600 and maybe a $1,000 in addition for a walkaround...total would run around $3000...plus a battery too I would think.

Seems Nikon's lens line up equivalent to Canon is always a bit pricier. Then there's the workflow to consider and if I want a separate flash; well that has to be Nikon...and on it goes.

Wish it wasn't so hard/expensive to add a second system...

Oh Well.

I've been following the 5DMKIII and other than the Ebay thing with Adorama..which I missed, I haven't seen a price drop from the $3,500 range yet. ???

Guess I'll have to watch closer.

One other thought here....

Although I do make some $$$ of photography...It's still basically a hobby for me and changing bodies is a want not a need. In the past Canon has made changing bodies way to tempting as in the original 5D, 5DII and 7D....bought em all when they first came out.

Guess Canon thinks I've been spending too much money on their product so they made it a lot less tempting with the 5DIII price and the dumbed down 6D. :)

I bit the Adorama deal. So now I have a T3i and a 5D3 (i like the number 3?) 5d3 is a great camera, much better build quality. My daughter and I do a moderate amount of shooting and she is usually handling the t3i, lighter/smaller fits her better. I bet the T3i will still be working when I trade in/up for the next upgrade... 5d5, .5d1 etc. I high build quality small body would be nice.

The t3i produces some amazing images, and the operating envelope is smaller, it stills seems to get the job done 99% of the time - really haven't found where it doesn't... we done treck through antartica, outer mongolia, etc, etc. We may not find an event when it doesn't get it done.

At this point the big gains are the auto focus.

If you see me with a wrench - call 911. 5d3, T3i, 17-55 2.8, 50 1.8, 70-200 2.8 L II, 24-105 f4. YN 565, Precision Lupe attached to hacked extended eyecup (no sticky frame) - old enough to have owned an original F-1

You are so right, I've been checking some neat picks on 500px, and some photographers pulls some neat **** even on a 7D, so PLEASE it's not going to make you a better photographer.

If you don't believe me, go find out by yourself on a lot of image host sites.
Somes got old camera and make the new one look like crap.
If you can do better, than I think you are god hahahahaha

I really really think you must learn HOW to make a nice picture....I'm not insulting you
but I think that a lot of camera are going to waste for new technology, for sure Nikon has a nice sensor, everybody knows, but your's ain't bad either, with some more experience, you'll save yourself a lot of money.......

Go see the magic, and they don't all have the latest technology

Funny thing if you look at every camera i've owned:

Nikon N70, N75, D70
Canon EOS 3, 30D, 7D

Thing for 3s and 7s?

As for the 7D, Yeah, I want a FF camera more for say, using a 28mm f/1.8 as a 28mm f/1.8, Not a 44mm lens (in terms of field of view) because to me that opens some VERY creative oppertunities... But I am really happy with my 7D and if an APS-C 17mm f/1.4 or something came out, id probubly be the first in line to snatch it up...
