Hey All,
I'm practicing portraits, using my kids, my cat, the dog... whoever I can who will agree to sit still for a few minutes for me! This one is of one of my kids... aside from the fact that he needs his hair cut, what do you guys think?

Only a Mom would say he needs a haircut. ;)

Other than the "can we get this over with, Mom" look, it's a nice shot, you got the eyes in focus, which is the most important. You also resisted the attempt to open the aperture wide open in the frenzied hunt for creamy backgrounds that typically results in one eye alone being in focus. Possibly a tad over-exposed. Check out his left cheek.

I actually like his expression, kind of 'nonchalant' look. So much better then the ' Ok kids keep that cramped smile so we can show the world how happy you are-look' lol.

Maybe a tad overexposed but nice and sharp around the eyes!

Joedlh - great points - I hadn't noticed the left cheek at all.... how would I use LR3 to fix this (if possible?)

He is a great model - super patient. But ya he was getting tired of me shooting him all day. lol

Blow-out areas can't be fixed. Because the pixel values are uniformly maxed out. The gradients can't be recovered. If you shoot in raw mode, you have an easier chance of recovery because all of the sensor data is kept and you don't have the camera's internal image processing unit post-processing the images in a way that it thinks you want.

Very Cute!

I would shoot from just a touch lower to be right at his eye level, and perhaps go to a smaller apeture to get a bit more depth of field.

or perhaps a crop like this one.
