Use Canon ink to avoid any ink related problems. Although some 3rd party inks appear to work well.

and if using other then Canon paper (especially Kodak or Ilford brands) be prepared to slow the printing speed down (by going to manual high-quality).

My personal recommendation is Canon ink with Ilford Gallerie Classic Pearl paper. I have gotten the best overall results with this combination so far.

For more info there is this although it is now a touch out of date, it may still help.

Lastly I recommend using the Post Processing and Printing Forum for future questions on your printer

Great printer, you will love it. Buy some extra carts of the PM and PC colors. You are going to need it. Take care~

AMAZING PRINTER. Only thing you'll notice is that it's HUGE; albeit still pretty. I was really impressed with how fast it could print even a 13"x19" the advertisements really aren't far fetched at all!

I have the I9900 and I love it. I use the Ilford paper without any special setting and it looks great. The only thing I dont like about this printer is that it doesnt do black and white very well. I now wish I had gotten one that would do a better job on black and white. That is the only problem I have with it.

I worked with Epson 2200 printers before I got the Canon i9900 and I felt the Canon did a much better job on black and white prints then the Epson did.

I read on another forum there are no new i9900 in the pipeline (not being manufatured), Canon is getting ready to release the replacement. I don't know how long it will be but its comming. If you want a i9900 then now is the time. No doubt the replacement will have the new chipped cartridges and ChromaLife ink. I don't know if its bad or good.

I have had a i9900 since the June 04 and love the speed and quality of the prints, don't cherish the thought of going to chipped cartridges if I have to relplace my i9900.

if you have trouble with black and white it may be the quartz filter setting on the printer.

Thanks for all the advice. My only question is, is there any other printer that will deliver similar results at a lesser price?

the i9900 is at an awesome price right now (430 with a $50 rebate). i belive its the best deal for a wide format printer, but if you dont need 11X17 or 13X19 prints you might look at the lesser canon models.

I've been using the i9900 since spring and I couldn't be happier with a printer. The color quality and detail produced by the small ink droplets this printer has is very impressive. Ocaisionally I have prints made at a professional lab, and it's very hard to see the differences between photos from the lab or from the i9900. You do go through alot of ink cartridges in the process. But that is a small price to pay for the superb quality this printer produces.

Popular Photography magazine just did a story on the i9900 and the competing Epson and HP. They are all the same price (list). The Canon did very well although it wasn't a real 1st, 2nd and 3rd place type article. Might be on their web site.
