I wonder if a softbox mounted on my camera would help me with regards to outdoor night shots.

Who makes an affordable and effective model?

What is wrong or needs improvement in the shots?

I use a speed light mounted Lastolite EZbox speed light mounted soft box for more diffused light, a flash bracket and Ettl cord to get the flash off camera further away from the lens axis to minimize red eye plus produce different shadowing for contrast or use a Honl speed snoot for better catchlight bounce or to concentrate the light.

You also first need to understand that the flash will produce a different effect or look depending on which mode the camera is in such as auto,Tv, Av, manual, etc.. There are many great threads or stickies here to help explain this.

Remember that, unless you are really close, the relative small size of either a bare speedlite or small soft box will deliver essentially the same light to the subject. Its much more useful, as noted above, to get the light farther from the lens axis.

Have a look at this blog entry (external link). While it was not on camera it was close to on axis due to the subject distance.

I should experiment with backing the flash away from the subject.... That might be better than these little softboxes.

Still, Rudy... Thanks for that blog link, that give me an idea of what to expect.

By the way, last night i experimented with wrappng white paper around the flash and ripping it open to approximate one of those wraparound units...I was surprised how effective it was.

As always, I'll keep experimenting... Thanks for the responses so far!

There is also a strobist type kit that has a mini beauty dish that can be effective had held as well as on camera.
You could also look into a bounce card. Light, simple, easy to use, softens light, inexpensive, and can make one yourself for free with paper and tape.

The strobella looks like it could send some reflected light into the lens possibly off the frame if it isn't retracted far enough.
