I have the nifty, and am keeping it, but on a crop sensor it's pretty tight.

Any suggestions on what prime I should have? I'm moving away from zooms.

I mostly shoot people out and about, always with them knowing. More like event photography. I do a lot of events (as an amateur).

Thanks

Thank you. bw!

35 f/1.4 is a good walk around. At times is find it not tight enough so i'll throw on the 50 1.4 or the 85 1.8. Love my 85

Sigma 30, 35L, samyang 35, canon 28, canon 35 f2.... I think that's your options. 24Lii is nice as well

If 50 is too tight, then 35 is your guy. You could also try the pancake.

In relatively normal views there are the following FLs -

Canon 24L, 28, 35, 40

Sigma 20, 24, 28, 30

There may be others I missed

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

I honestly think 24mm on crop is one of the best options for walk around. When I had my 60D, the 24L was glued there 95% of the time. Perhaps try the new 28 1.8 if budget is a concern?

Thanks, friends. I'm going to go for the 28 1.8 fairly soon (just have to scrounge up a few bucks).

I'm thinking that I'm done with zoom lenses (have tried dozens), and although some of the nicer once produce excellent images, a prime always wins. I only shoot static objects and people who don't move fast, so a zoom isn't really needed.

Thank you. bw!

My thirty sig/1.4 is on the way. According to KR it has slow focus but most reviews favor it's IQ over the Canon 28 f/1.8. Much talk of the Canon's severe CA and poor sharpness..just sayn

ive got the 28 1.8 and it's pretty nice for a walk around, equal to about 43mm fov or so i believe.

crank your 28-135 out back to 28 and see if that is wide enough for you. if not maybe you should go for the 24.
Sigma 30 is another good option, but i didn't want to chance the sharp copy issue and i got a really good deal on my 28. I believe B&H has it used for around $399 right now

I personally would try the Sigma 30 first. Used to own one and loved it.

If that doesn't work out for you try 28f1.8 or 35f2 next.

Reason is Sigma is a class above. 28f1.8 is soft wide open, 35f2 is noisy and produces ugly bokeh (5 blades).

Tried the 70-200 f/4L IS ? It never ceases to amaze me. It's pricey but truly an incredible piece of glass

Sigma 30 or Canon 35 F/2 are the obvious choices.

I am very happy with the Sigma 30 1.4. I originally had a Canon 50 1.4 but it was too tight indoors and not nearly as useful in general on a crop.

Mike,
I'm going to suggest that you take a serious look at the 40mm pancake in addition to the 28 that you're planning on obtaining and that you ultimately consider the 85 f/1.8 in the equation.

Not knocking the nifty-fifty but my primes are the 28, 40, 50 f/1.4, and 85. I haven't had/used the 28 & 40 long enough to classify them as my favorites but both will probably end up on my short list of favorites, including the 85 and 70-200 L. Just got a 24-105 and it is probably going to end up at the top of my list as well ... I've had it about a week and have only shot one event but was quite impressed with the results.

Anyway, back to the 28/40/85 ... all are very nice primes and very affordable, making them a nice bang for the buck. Regardless of your choices, good luck with your search.

Thanks, Jret.

I actually owned the 85 1.8 once (within my first year of photography) and didn't like it. The user wasn't functioning correctly so I sold it. Unfortunately the user still wasn't working any better. ;)

I will get the 85 again. This time I'll use it correctly. It was great (unless wide open and pointed at anything shiny....purple haze, all in my brain. But that's fixable). However, I need a prime that's a lot wider. So I have to find something a good bit less than the 50mm 1.8 (in terms of mm, not price). 28 might be good for a start, but if I stick with primes I'll have to go down even more. Plus, I'm trying to save for full frame. I'll most likely get a 5D2 or a classic if I get too impatient.

Is the 28 1.8 USM considered as good as the 85 1.8?

I got a couple good ones out of the 85 1.8 when I had it for a month or so (back when I was a lot more impatient and wanted to improve immediately). Most were blurry (user error), but a few came out.

This last one from the 85 was exposed poorly and never fixed up properly, but it's still one of my favorites. That dog is so sweet to our family (Rusty), and my daughter is sweet too. All our dogs gravitate toward her because of her personality. This shot wasn't posed, but her smile was due to spotting me as I snuck up on them while they were watching TV together.
