Thanks, Jret.
I actually owned the 85 1.8 once (within my first year of photography) and didn't like it. The user wasn't functioning correctly so I sold it. Unfortunately the user still wasn't working any better.
I will get the 85 again. This time I'll use it correctly. It was great (unless wide open and pointed at anything shiny....purple haze, all in my brain. But that's fixable). However, I need a prime that's a lot wider. So I have to find something a good bit less than the 50mm 1.8 (in terms of mm, not price). 28 might be good for a start, but if I stick with primes I'll have to go down even more. Plus, I'm trying to save for full frame. I'll most likely get a 5D2 or a classic if I get too impatient.
Is the 28 1.8 USM considered as good as the 85 1.8?
I got a couple good ones out of the 85 1.8 when I had it for a month or so (back when I was a lot more impatient and wanted to improve immediately). Most were blurry (user error), but a few came out.

This last one from the 85 was exposed poorly and never fixed up properly, but it's still one of my favorites. That dog is so sweet to our family (Rusty), and my daughter is sweet too. All our dogs gravitate toward her because of her personality. This shot wasn't posed, but her smile was due to spotting me as I snuck up on them while they were watching TV together.

Thank you.
