When i read about the HIS used in the 100 L IS macro, i was intrigued. According to reports here, the HIS was only partially useful at macro distances, but at non macro distances i understood that it worked nicely.

Though to the best of my understanding, theHIS system was not included in other IS enabled lenses. Does this mean that Canon was not impressed enough with it?

My understanding is it works on slight shakes front to back tilts where the non-hybrid (normal) system works up/down and/or side to side. The hybrid system would then only be really useful for macro distances and only for a stop or two. The 100mm FL is the only FL where new macro has been produced. If/when Canon updates another FL, we will see if they abandon it. My guess with the success of the 100L they will not. But it adds a lot of cost to a lens and I do not see them putting it on a 50mm or a 60mm FL, and the 180L is already very expensive for a specialty lens.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim
