Heading to New York in a week...

Hi guys. I'm taking a trip to NYC in a week, and I'm looking to upgrade one of my lenses. My current kit is a 60D with a Tamron 17-50 non-vc, Canon 50mm 1.4, and a Canon 70-300. I'm thinking about either upgrading the 70-300 to a 70-200 f4 IS, or adding the Tokina 11-16 for a UWA. However, I'm thinking that the 17 will be wide enough- not true? Or replacing the 70-300 with a 135L, for candid street portraits and as a general telephoto. Plus, I love the bokeh, and I'm going to be outdoors most of the time anyway, so I'm thinking it won't be too long. Which would you recommend I get? Thanks!

I just got back from a trip to the UK, and when we were in London, I never even took my 70-200mm out of the bag. There was plenty of times, though, when I wished I had something wider than my 17-35mm on my full-frame 5d2. I'd say go for the 11-16mm. I also left my 135mm f/2L at the hotel, as it didn't seem to provide any real benefit. I used the 17-35mm about 80% of the time, with my 28-75 on the camera the other 20%.

I assume you're talking about Manhattan. I live 9 miles from the GWB and spent two years working construction there in the seventies. WTC and others. If someone said go there and photograph the best spots that you know, I would take my Canon 70-200 f/4 is and my Tokina 12-24. You can get some great shots of the old downtown areas with it's narrow streets and old 1800's character. The larger attractions, such as the bridges and Statue of Liberty are easily photographed with the 70-200. You
DONT'T want to be walking around Manhattan with a large cumbersome lens at all. Also take a good flash for the museums and such.

FWIW, I have a 10-22 for my 40D and a 17-40 for my 5D2/3. I rarely ever use these UWAs. But, on a trip to Manhattan, I use these lens a *lot*.

Telephoto lens like 70-200/4L IS or 70-300 IS don't get much use except for boat rides, stadiums in NYC, or if you go to a very crowded event where you are stuck in the back.

When I ran around NYC a few weeks ago, I had three lens for my 5D3: 17-40, 24-105, and a 35L for low light. I also brought my 270EX for fill flash, that I used a few times.
