A tablet pc really is a glorified displaying device which can do bit more than just display and nothing else. Wouldn't spend on such a device for editing photos.

No I would never edit photos on a tab. I need my portable option for reviewing images live in the studio since the camera display is to small, writing and editing documents (research papers) and take notes on lectures.

Anywhere you can read a book. There are more e-ink devices with built in lights now though.

I like to read in the dark so a lit display is a must for me.

That's fair enough, but I rather have a laptop, that is just me, you can do whatever you like

Would you rather concider a $300 laptop than a $300 tablet? :)

I've been using an ASUS transformer TF301 for awhile, and it has replaced my usage of a netbook and laptop due to battery life, and ease of transport. It is a convertible, so typing and such works very well with the keyboard dock (A keyboard dock that actually functions well at that). I do not use it for editing, and I have not yet found an app that plays well with reviewing large number of RAWs, but I just shoot +jpg for review if I'm planning to use it as such.

It is Not a full functional replacement for a full scale laptop that is well suited to any great deal of processing, but it works great as a data review device and light computing. I do not miss doing heavy work in the field, that is what my main system back home is for. When I'm in the field, I want to be working on stuff that I'm in the field for, not heavy processing.

What do you mean with +jpeg? Raw+jpeg?

Yes, sorry, raw+jpg. quickly review jpgs on the tablet to see what is going on, do actual work with the raw files later when I get home.

Ok, so you can choose to only import jpeg? What software do you use?

I had been using three or four different programs to handle the raw .cr2 files for review, but they all suffered from the same issue of frequent crashes when dealing with more than a few dozen at a time. Now I'm using the standard Android Gallery to view the jpg copies, or DSLR Controller if I'm working tethered, which is something I've just started getting into.

The TF301 does have the power to deal with viewing cr2 files in decent time, but the issue is simply software. I'm guessing all the programs I have tried are suffering the same problem of poor memory handling, and a piece of common middleware is not correctly configured for the limited system memory.

Desktop PC is still a must.

Notebook or tablet, why don't you wait for the windows 8 tablets with keyboard docks to show up and think it over

On some tablets you are able to view RAW files e.g. iPad (I know these are very expensive), I am not sure on the ASUS Nexus 7, but I think you have to pay for an app to view RAW

Correct, depending on the specs, the desktop nevertheless is best for editing photos

Is there a way to shoot jpeg+raw and only have the jpegs transferred to a laptop when tethering? I can tether to my current laptop but since I shoot raw it takes about 10s for a photo to show up on the computer. I imagine it would be much quicker if the computer only had to display a small jpeg, which would be quite enough for checking the lighting and obvious oof blur.

By the way. 32GB ram vs 16GB ram. The prize difference is about 1300 sek ($195) including vat. What would you get?
