I been trying to figure out to use aperture, exposure, iso etc , most of my pictures are coming up pretty much like these two, I can`t tell if is out of focus or camera shake. what am I doing wrong?

These two pictures are blurred because of motion blur caused by a slow shutter. You need to either use your flash, raise your ISO which allows a faster shutter speed, or get a faster lens like the 50 f/1.4

Your shutter speed is too slow. In order to safely handheld and not have to worry about shake, you need to use a shutter speed no slower than 1/the focal length. In other words, if you are shooting at 50mm, you can avoid blur due to camera shake by using a shutter speed of 1/50 or faster. In order to get this speed, you may need to boost your ISO.

I agree with Joel on the motion blur. Except IMO a faster lens does help but you sacrifice DOF and for shots like these that may not be desirable. I would up the ISO and use neatimage or noise ninja to remove the noise. Fast motion such as these shots no slower than 1/125 and maybe up to 1/250.

I used to have the same problem. I have 4 boys, all active, and couldn't catch them without blur. The truth is, you can try to do the faster shutter, higher ISO, but the lens is really the key. Get yourself a faster lens, about $300 and up, and you won't have trouble anymore (well, within reason). I have the 50 1.4 and it is fantastic! I also have the 85 1.8 and that is even better. I am a soccer mom and coach and those lenses, even in low light, work much better than even my 28-135 IS, which is supposed to take care of camera shake. Try the ISO thing first and shutter speed, then ask for a better lens. It's worth it. Now I have 4 boys, still active and I just keep chasing them down. Good luck!

I understand. I lived in Binghamton, NY for 9 years and it was cold. When it snows next time, go out and take pictures of your kids in the snow. You'll love it.

Hmm I live in Pennsylvania too. *wink wink nudge nudge* :p

Seriously though it's been moderately warm here lately so I'd jump on the break in the cold and take them out a little. Get them where you have enough light and even the kit lens will be fast enough. It has little to do with the lens specifically...it's about the shutter speed. Faster lenses just help get the faster shutter speeds by letting you open up the aperture.

1/250th or faster is ideal for fast movement. 1/100th will let you stop someone when they're walking kinda slow...but 1/250th can stop certain actions in volleyball (just mentioned for perspective).
