Hello, everyone!

I really need some help here.

This might be a common situation, but I really didn’t notice it on my first months using the 7D.

But on recent events I’ve noticed that noise is a bit too much for my taste.
What do you guys think?

Exif is intact so you might find out that the first two shots were taken at ISO 160 and the third at 320.

Is there something wrong with my camera?

My 5d MKII doesn’t seem to show this kind of noise…

Thank you all for your help.

Looks like normal 7D images ...
You wont get 5D MK II IQ and noise from a 7D
because the pixels are too small for quality light gather.

I'm not sure what you're complaining about. Those are some nice shots.

Yep nice shots, but the 7D will give you noise in a blue sky at low ISOs. Maybe expose a stop over and bring it back down, but I'm not sure how much that would help.

Wait...

I didn't remember photobucket resizes images...

I wanted to post links to full size shots. There's where I notice all the noise.

Of course, these tiny samples don't show any noise.

Let's try it again (cropped third to comply with imageshack 3MB restrictions):

I bought a 7D two months ago just for the "reach", tried it at an airshow last months, then compared the 7D pictures against those of the 5DIII from a different airshow, sold the 7D within a week. Albeit the different lighting of the two shows, I prefer the files form the 5DIII much better. The 5DIII seem to have much more details.

Thanks for the input but I really don't want to compare the 7D (crop body) with full frame cameras (as I said, I have a 5d MKII).

What I'm worried about is the possibility that my own 7D, when compared to other 7Ds might be experiencing some problems.

You can see the my 7D pictures in this thread:

But some folks got really sharp pictures out of their 7Ds...

It looks a little noisy too me especially at a low ISO 160 in your first picture. I'm thinking your photos are a little under exposed and its bringing out more noise then normal.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Would you be able to share your raw files? Those really help to tell the story and help others help you. Try sharing the emailed link from wetransfer.com if you are willing to upload it.

To me personally, it looks like you are using sharpening a bit too high without first running a really light NR run.

Here is an ISO 1600 shot that was exposed about 1/2 stop over and then pulled back in DPP.

If you don't remove noise and do all your sharpening and other settings on the image, you would end up with this for ISO 1600. Before and after post processing results of a 100% crop will follow this reply. I always keep all settings pretty low (contrast, sharpening, etc), then fix exposure, then noise, then fix contrast, sharpening, saturation and misc others.

Before and after 100% crops, when I use my personal set of camera settings and then a quick action in CS3 that uses a variety of steps and Noiseware to remove minor amounts of noise along the way.

TeamSpeed.: Thanks a lot for your help and effort.

I'll post the raw files as you mentioned, but there's one small detail: I didn't do any sharpening - or other kind of edit - on those shots.

They're straight out of the camera.

One thing I don't remeber - I'll have to check, because I don't have the 7D with me right now... - is how my in-camera settings were at the moment (maybe sharpening was a bit too high at that particular event).

Your results are really amazing, and I'd like to achieve that kind of finish on my shots, even if it takes some more effort in terms of editing, or - that must be the case - I have to learn how to set up my camera properly before shooting....

I'll be back in a moment...

@ Teamspeed,

did you change as well the pictures style settings on your camera?
Like the sharpness, contrast, etc.? If you do, what settings are you using?

Thanks,
Christian

I use picture styles only to save time when I go to DPP.

I use a custom picture style based on the neutral style that sets contrast left 1 value from center, saturation 1 value left from center, and sharpness at setting 1 to the left (far left).

I use high noise reduction set to low as well.

I then run a custom action on the file that cleans up what it can, then adds a bit contrast, saturation, etc. I then only tweak what I feel is missing.

Basically the file is pretty blah when pulled into CS3, but then the action takes care of business to an extent (I keep the settings mild) and I enhance the final result based on my mood and what I want from the photo.

I really don't know how wetransfer works, so I hope this is the link you were asking for.

I realized that the third shot is a jpeg!
