I just purchased the 5d2 and i need a wider lens than the ones I have. I have 70-200 and 85 1.8.

I am realyl just using the lens for my child (still a baby) and when we go out of town and travel to the bigger cities/ visit family.

Im kind of trying to decide on another lens and since i purchased a new camera, i dont have much more for a lens quite yet. My wife did say if i had to have it, $500 would be the absolute most. Under would be idea.

I figured i could go with the 50 1.8 and look really responsible, but i think eventually i would like to have a 24-70.

With that being said, should i get nifty and save up for another zoom later? or should i get something like a 28-105.

or something else.

If someone could help me figure out a wider-than-what-i-have lens, that would be helpful. I am keeping my eye open on the various buy/sell sections as well.

I wouldnt mind going with a tamron or sigma either if they seemed to be popular. my 70-200 is a sigma and i love it.

---------------
maybe i could get the 50 and rent other lenses to try out. i have also thought about 16-35 but thats way out of my range for right now.

Sigma's 24-70 used maybe? You can get it for around $600ish for a good copy. Besides, being used you already know if that lens focuses properly or not.

50/1.4 would be nice for low-light/shallow DOF, but isn't a lot wider than the 70 on your zoom. A 35 maybe, but you're limited to either the 35L(way too pricey) or the 35/2( not the greatest). There's also the 28/1.8, but opinions vary a lot on it too.

The 40mm pancake would be wider, cheap as sin..~$220 new, but not real fast(f/2.8). This would be my recommendation.

Hard to beat the Tamron 28-75.You can find them used for under $300 and it's a stellar lens. I love mine.

If you want new the Tamron 28-75/2.8 and the Canon 28-135 are about all that fits the budget in a zoom. A 35/2 and 50/1.8 would fit if you want primes. Used, you might find a 17-40 but that's UWA. The 24-85 is a good used option too.

Tamron 28-75 for sure. Unless you can talk another $250 out of your wife, then I'd say the 24-105 f/4 would be the best choice.

That would be great if you sell your 5D2 and pick up a 7D. But otherwise it's a crop lens that won't work, at least without major shortcomings, on full frame.
