I am going to start building a set of Contax Zeiss lenses and had a question about the 50mm. I noticed that it only has 6 blades. Most of the alt prime 50s that I've shot with have 8 (SMC Pentax being my favorite so far), and have great bokeh. I may be completely missing the mechanical qualifiers of good bokeh, but I was under the impression that - in general - the more blades, the better bokeh wide open, as it creates a perfect circle. Can anyone speak on the bokeh of the Contax Zeiss 50mm f/1.4?
Thanks!

I've owned the newer ZE planar Zeiss 50 f/1.4 and the bokeh is nervous wide open, but improves rapidly as you stop down. By f/2 it is much smoother and at f/2.8 it is better (smoother) than the Sigma 50 f/1.4

The Contax version may be a different animinal though...

I went through hundreds, if not thousands, of shots on Flickr. From Contax and ZE versions of Zeiss 50 1.4.
Realized, I could see the difference due to less blades in Contax in the bokeh. Nuts instead of circles.
Plus, ZE has camera controlled aperture, plus it is all metal, including focusing ring.
No regrets, I paid extra for ZE.
IMO, bokeh is not crazy from it wide open, it just not washed away like with others 50 1.4.

Thanks. I actually want the Contax version because I do not want electronically controlled aperture. I want the ring; I do mostly video.
