back in the day, there used to be a "Rite of Passage" on POTN that your first picture had to be of ducks.

Seems to have tapered off with all the newer POTN members.

I still have a download folder called DUCKS

For me it is usually whatever is right in front of me, so my desk or whatever is on it - the camera box.

I selected other because you didn't include "the inside of the camera shop". That, plus the street outside are the first things I photograph, before I actually hand over the money.

This is my choice. I shoot something in the shop, or the clerk, or the street outside, or all of these. Since I don't buy a camera that I can't put my hands on first, I always shoot in the shop using a card I bring with me.

First thing I shot with my 5D Mark II was the village I grew up in halfway around the world that I hadn't been to in 19 years...beat THAT!! :D :D :D
