I have a cracked red ring on my 24-105. It just broke in half. It doesn't bother me, but I am going to sell the lens. As a CPS member, I thought I would send it in for a clean and check before I sold it, and get the ring replaced.

EXCEPT CANON WON"T GIVE ME AN ESTIMATE!!!! They have to see the lens first. Maddening.

Has anyone every had their red ring repaired? If so, what did it cost?

I had the same problem on the same lens. I sent the lens to Canon and they said they couldn't just replace the red ring, but had to replace the front assembly. I don't remember the exact estimate, but I think it was going to be a couple of hundred dollars. It was not worth it for just a cosmetic detail. The lens worked fine otherwise, so I decided not to repair it. It will probably be more economical for you to sell the lens as is; just advise the buyer of the missing red ring. Of course, it's possible that Canon will give you a different estimate once you send it in. Good luck!

Usually they have 3 flat rates of $100 increments, starting at $99.
I find their rates reasonable & more importantly quality of work speaks for itself.
Lucky for me Irvin Center(West coast center) is near my residential area so if not working on a week day, can easily take whatever I need to them and get the free estimate that is fully on judgment of front desk guy. Good thing is sensor cleaning and some other services are free on models that are still considered non-absolute.

I just had the ID band and red ring on my 100 2.8L Macro replaced. I am at the Gold Level of CPS and with my 30% discount it was about $132 as I recall.

You will need to make the choice for yourself. For me it was worth it as my experience on selling is that things like that will drop a couple of hundred from an expected price. Your mileage may differ but at least you have an idea on the cost. As mentioned by another post they needed to replace the entire filter assembly--the front part of the lens.

I wonder if thats a fault with the 24-105? When I was at a photo expo last weekend, I was looking at the 6D and it had a 24-105 on it...with a missing red ring, lol. Odd, considering it was on display at the Canon booth.

It for sure is common that the ring breaks on the 24-105... Read about it all the time. Not sure why it happens but my guess is maybe if that barrel part the ring is on is metal, if it goes through a lot of cold and hot temperature changes it ends up fatiguing the ring. After enough time it breaks.

It seems 24-105's red ring is at fault here, could be material related 'coz mine got broken too, I live in the tropics so it's almost sunny all year long (NO snow and I never shoot under the rain) therefore extreme temperature swing is not a factor. I have 2 other L lenses w/ their red rings still in good condition.
If ever I decide to have it repaired/replaced then it is mainly for cosmetic purpose, off course I do miss the red ring.

I discovered that mine broke a couple of days ago. As far as I know it didn't get dropped or bumped recently.

I put the broken ring on my desk. The cat decided it's a nice toy. I haven't seen it since.

Not worth repairing, but it'll be painful to sell.

Happened to my old 24-105mm. A drop of super glue and it is fine. I'm not going to spend a hundred on a cosmetic defect.

When I had sold my 24-105 with a missing red ring, I marketed it as a plus. The ring and the white lenses all scream "steal me". Just find a seller who appreciates security over vanity and you'll be fine. Also getting it fixed would probably destroy your profit margin.

Same lens, same problem. Had my lens repaired (for another problem) and they replaced the red ring too. The "parts" came to a handful of £s.

Just tell prospective buyers that it's the special "stealth" version of the lens that sells for a premium price.... ;)

Or go get a small paint brush, some fingernail polish or Testor's model paint in the color of your choice, and get busy.

Pin striping tape from an auto parts/paint supply store might work well, too.

Yeah, mine broke on the 24-105, seems like a common issue with this lens.

I repaired mine with some two part epoxy glue - been good for years now
