I would say that is good deal. Minty ones go for about $5800 - 6000. As long as it isn't beat completely to crap, I would say go for it.

You can't get a better lens for that money, period.

That is the lens I use for almost all of my wildlife photography. My lens has many, many "signs of wear", but that does not affect the images it takes whatsoever - and that's what matters!

The lens works seamlessly with the 1.4 extender, and surprisingly well with the 2x. If the guy selling the lens offers these to you for a decent price, be sure to grab them, too.

And by all means, make sure it comes with the original hood; if not, you'll have to shell out over $500 for one. It's best to always shoot with the hood on; mine never gets taken off, except when I clean the front glass.

You wouldn't get mine for that price and they seem to be in equal quality. I'll also second Tom - get at least the 1.4x as little to no hit in IQ or AF speed. 2x down the road for occassional use.

Better yet, post some photos you take with it!

Remember, the 400 f2.8 has a wonderfully close minimum focus distance, so you can do some "macro style" photography with it, particularly if:
1) you use a converter with it
2) you use it on a 1.6 crop with high pixel density

It is actually quite food for close-ups of salamanders, toads, bumblebees, etc. A truly versatile lens!

@Tom,

How does the 400 2.8 I.S. work with extension tubes for macro/close up work?

Have you ever tried it?

Just curious.

Thanks. :)

Photographers do it in 1/1,000th of a second...but the memory lasts forever! ;)

I have not tried extension tubes yet, but I do plan on getting them sometime.
