I just got a 60d, took my first series of shots, put them in the computer and I can see the pic in the thumbnail, but opening says "image format not supported" or some crap like that.

I have aperture 2, and apparently from what I have found on the Internet, only aperture 3 supports 60d raw files...is this true? Are there no workarounds?

I think I will buy Lightroom 4 before I upgrade to aperture3 if this is the case, but I have plug ins for aperture. I am so pisssed at this....

Any way I can use aperture 2 and 60d?

Thanks.

Ps- I am not interested in dpp then tiff etc.

It would be cheaper to upgrade Aperture than to buy LR and you already have the plugins

Convertin to DNG using the (free) Adobe DNG converter should work.

(unless you're shooting sRAW http://williambeem.com/the-dng-trap/ (external link) )

I am shooting in raw and want to edit.

If I update aperture, will my plug ins and everything still automatically be there and will I not need to reinstall etc.?

I also heard that nik hdr (which i use) doesn't play nice with ap. 3. Anyway, I am sure lightroom is better, but if the aperture upgrade is typical of apple and it is just a down load and then everything is running fine and all plugins are there and all old folders and files are there it is kinda hard to not go that route. Is that the case?

I've been using NiK plugins with Aperture for over a year. Yes, it will update and no your plugins won't disappear. It takes care of everything. I upgraded and everything was just as it was, folders and all.

Cool, thanks guys.

For what I do, I like the organization and basic aperture editing along with the power of nik plugins so I would like to stick with this setup.

I have to look into dng files, that is interesting and something I obviously didn't know. I would have to imagine that some integrity is being lost in a file conversion though? Although assumption is never good.

I will just spend the $80 or whatever and update to aperature 3 since I have all my files and plugins there and I am essentially happy. Hopefully 3 has some perks as well...

No, there are no workarounds. Aperture 2 is almost 5 years old and Apple is no longer updating it. The latest Digital Camera Raw updates require Aperture 3 to add support for newer cameras.

I think I will buy Lightroom 4 before I upgrade to aperture3 if this is the case, but I have plug ins for aperture. I am so pisssed at this....

This won't change the underlying problem. You have to keep your software up to date, or you will lose the ability to edit files from new model cameras. Adobe just released Camera Raw 7.0 and they required all users to upgrade to Lightroom 4 to use it. No different that what happened with Apple, and it will happen again with both companies. Your old software and camera raw combination will always continue to work with the camera you had at the time, but software companies are interested in developing new technologies and generating new revenue.

Any way I can use aperture 2 and 60d?

No

Aperture 2 was a 32 bit program. Aperture 3 is a 64 bit program. You may have to update some plugins.

I also heard that nik hdr (which i use) doesn't play nice with ap. 3.

All Nik plugins work fine with Aperture 3, although the new versions are 64 bit and you may have to update.

Maybe, but not guaranteed. Is your OS up to date? You'll need Mountain Lion to upgrade to the latest version of Aperture unless you can find a version prior to 3.4.

Holy crap, what a con.

Now I need mountain lion?? I am perfectly happy with my snow leopard and been purposefully keeping my mac fast by leaving the os alone. I guess since I have never switched to a newer digital body I am a total newbie to all this. What a PITA.

so what is the DNG converter? That sounds like a pain, but maybe it isn't? I am going to do that now and see what I can do. I reluctantly shot raw + jpeg at work today to be anle to email clients in case i couldnt get the raw thing worked out tonight, but it wasn't anything I needed earth shattering photos for. Of course after I realized I did not change any presets on jpegs and rolled auto wb, raw has made me sooo lazy with wb:lol:.

I assume if I go to upgrade to ap 3 it will know I do not have mountain lion and make me get that? Apple is the only company on earth I love and hate equally.

Oh yeah, for what it is worth, the 60d was purchased just as a cheap aps c upgrade to have for more hobby shooting of mine(surfing, kids, etc). I will be getting a 6d or 5dii When the jury is out on the 6d for workand I think the 60d is a fine compliment to either.

Soooo, if I get a 6d and not a 5d, then I am right back in this same scenerio until aperture gets what it needs from canon? Do they try to time updates for brand new releases?

DNG converter: https://www.adobe.com …?product=106&platform=Mac (external link)

However, not sure that Aperture will work with any DNG:

Doesn't hurt to try though.

Yup Rene,

I did that last night, it works. It actually wasn't really as uh of a pain as I thought it would be. Basically it is one more step and 2 folders on my desktop. As impatient as I am, I was not very turned off by it so I will try this for a bit anyway.

Thanks for all the help guys, this canon community is awesome.

I didn't know that Aperture supports DNG. DNG keeps the Raw data, but it doesn't use the in-camera settings that would be used in a jpeg or that can be used with the Canon software Digital Photo Professional (DPP).
