I did the same thing with Cat5 (network cable) I work as a network administrator, and had all the stuff available so it cost nothing. Just took 2 wall jacks and put them both where I cut the cord. Made sure the colors matched on both sides. Then I can take or make any length of cat5 cable as the extension. No soldering, no costly or hard to get pieces, and the extension piece is easily made/bought.

Hi Henry. So what was the total cost of the project?

Also, was it a genuine Canon hot shoe cord that you used, or an imitation one.

Mini-DIN (PS/2) extension cables pre-made can be found here for cheap.

25 feet for $10 is not too bad at all.

My sync cord and cable arrived today, just waiting on the plugs and I will be all go.

also I have been given a Hanimex 550 Pro which uses pc sync and I would like to use it as a second flash. I am using a 400d so no pc sync and using the 430ex on e-ttl. Can I wire the Hanimex to fire off a e-ttl cable?

Ok guys I received my supplies, of a 25ft PS/2 cable and a set of male and female soldering connectors from the computer cable store,
However I ran a continuity check on the 25ft PS/2 extension cable and two of the pins on either end don't have a signal, don't appear to be connected.

Is this normal for a PS/2 cable.
The pins affected are as follows

I've had a project on the go for 2 years doing this - managed to fit a PCMCIA dongle socket on one end of the cable, and have a RJ-45 socket ready to fit to the main hot-shoe end shell. One day I may even finish it! in the meantime I just use a ST-E2...

did a quick look for PS-2 pinout, looks like there are a couple of pins not used.
see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS/2_connector (external link)
the pin numberings differ from your diagram but hopefully you get the idea...

This doesn't make sense. There are 5 wires plus a ground in the Off Camera Shoe Cord. I am pretty sure you need all 6 conductors.

I just checked one of my 6 Pin Mini DIN cords, and all pins are live.

yes - you'll certainly need 6 conductors for the hot-shoe cable, looks like Allan's got a PS-2 extension cable that just has the minimum number of conductors for a PS-2 device - which isn't 6...

Sorry for the incorrect numbering on my diagram, I didn't think to check Wiki, but it is the same pin layout, with the same two dead pins.
So my question is this.
Should I send the cable back and get a refund or see if they have an exchange for a PS/2 with all conductors connected or should I hack the molded PS/2 ends off and re-attach new PS/2 ends (Spare set I ordered) utilizing all the pins and wires, or is this molded cable only containing the minimum number of conductors?

Good job I haven't cut the Off camera shoe chord yet.
talk about being frustrated.

Ok I just got off the phone with the Computer cable store, I'm returning the 25ft PS/2, from the impression I got with the conversation it is only a 4 strand cable used, I have since ordered 50ft 6 conductor from their bulk cable section for $10, + $5 shipping.

So to others out there, do not buy PS/2 extension cables unless you are able to determine if all pins are connected.
