Hey folks. I'm looking for an opinion on price and spec on this external hard drive. My 1.5TB is filling up very quickly and I need an upgrade.

I have a $50 gift card at a local store. The sale price is $139 STBV3000100 so it's tempting for me to get.

Anyone has this product? I've heard of heat issues but I can live with that.

Any thoughts

Not sure if this would be a problem

I'm only going to use this drive as a backup drive not a boot up drive so hopefully it's not a problem. If it becomes a problem, I no issues splitting it into a smaller partitions.

Secondly, it's going to serve my iMac. Again hopefully no problem there. Still doing some reading.

How about deleting the images you don't want to keep? That saves heaps of space. I can fit 120 weddings finished RAW files, album layouts, and 5 years worth of personal photos on a 2TB drive with plenty of space spare.

As it's a backup I wouldn't worry about heat.

Sure that's another option ...

But what is your opinion about this unit?

It's a Seagate, it'll be fine.

Like Tim said. Besides, it's only $89 net to you. Buy it.

All drives fail, the only question is when.

MacOS shouldn't be a problem.

I agree with the above, get what you need, and Seagate, I have 3 of them. It's hard to be a pro without storing everything at first. But you shouldn't be nervous. These drives are meant to take the load.

I guess I should have been more clear. I was actually looking for opinions and hands-on experience from people that actually have this particular model. STBV3000100 (external link)

my apologies for the confusion.

All my drives apart from two SSD drives are Western Digital Black Caviar, they are quality. I'm not saying anything about Seagate over just one failure that happened within six months of purchase and to have one WD fail in 5 years of seriously hard usage, you can understand why I am nervous about Seagate HDD

To be honest, that drive is relatively new (noting that 3Tb storage has really just come out, though there are 4Tb external drives), so it would be hard to gauge on who has experience with this particular drive

and that is why I was asking. I have read a review on Amazon. I am just looking for more people that recently bought this model.

In my opinion. HDD failure will happen no matter what model/make you have. Time and wear & tear is your enemy. Preventive measures and risk management will help you safeguard against data lost.

Thanks for your reply.
