A recent purchase at an estate sale this morning got me thinking about this, what's the best deal you have scored?
This morning my fiancé wanted me to come to an estate sale with her, and being my first day off in 8 days, I was more than hesitant to drag myself out of bed. Her suggestion of me staying home and cleaning instead inspired me to get up. I'm glad I did. We got there and wandered through the house looking at everything. Nothing really of interest of me until I came across what looked to be some sort of "man cave"...lots of movies, a tv, an Atari (clearly this was the first man cave), lots of electronics, etc...I saw a camera bag sitting on a shelf with a price tag of $175, so I opened it up and inside was a t2i body! A bit scuffed up but still in great condition. Needless to say, I snatched it up in a heartbeat. What's your best deal?

Just within the past 3 months...a top-of-line SLR with 58mm f/1.4 lens, for $25. World's first SLR model with TTL metering. It is cosmetically excellent and fully operational!

It was unobtainable to a young teen (and to typical adults, except pros!), as it originally sold for $420 at a time when gas was $0.31/gal, and based on the price of a gallon of gas now, it would be $5500 new today. It was the object of my unfulfillable camera lust! Collectors now value that body and lens at about $450-550 on eBay today.

A 50 1.8 Mk I for $20, and a 50 2.8 Macro for $40. Lots of people with old film bodies think the lenses are obsolete.

But they are obsolete, and shouldn't be sold for more than $50 for the very best examples... wink wink.

In the one, I actually told the guy to keep the body and a second (kit) lens and to try selling them to somebody else. So he actually got to double his price. It allowed me to assuage my guilt a little bit.

5Dc with under 9k clicks (mirror fix had just been done, and he had the paperwork from Canon showing the shutter count), gripped (Canon grip), RRS L bracket, 4 Canon batteries, box, manuals, strap, etc. $700. Found it on CL, just about a mile from my house. Used it for almost a year before selling it.

My deal isn't quite as good as the others here, but I bought a 75-300 III at a garage sale for $45 and the very nice woman running the sale threw in two more EF lenses, a camera bag, and two Canon Rebel bodies (G and 2000) for free.

The Rebel G works perfectly, the Rebel 2000 had a slightly bent shutter, so I sent that back to Canon and got a massive discount through the Canon loyalty program on a refurbished 60D.

I have not found any great deals. But a friend of mine got a 20D with lens and bag for $10 at Goodwill several years ago. It was in mint condition. We think it was so cheap because it was set to NOT show the image on the LCD after the exposure. So the staff must have thought it didnt work right because the pic didnt pop up on the screen automaticaly.

For some odd reason, I have never found any truly great deals on up-to-date photography equipment.

I've gotten great deals on stuff for all of the other fields of interest I have pursued, including:

a duck stamp for $12 that I sold for $150,
new hunting boots for $10.50 that I sold on eBay for $190,
a $1 turkey call that I got $42 for,
1971 Plymouth 'Cuda fenders for $450 that I sold for $2500.
The list goes on and on and on.

But I can't find good, current Canon bodies or lenses for even 30% off of new. What's with that?! I think photographers are just too greedy when it comes time to sell:p

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
