Why don't you try to make it into a square picture by cropping out some of the left side. The tree will then be on the far left of the image, which may make the composition more balanced.

There are a few keys to taking them. In my experience, working in the outdoors is easier. But then again, I've always been a big fan of natural light. Converting images to black and white also benefits some silhouettes.

As a general rule of thumb, again based on my own experience, is that as much of the lighting as possible should come from behind the subject, hence the reason times like sunset seem to work well.

I love the lights.
