A Interesting development: Tamron has announced a VC version of the 70-200 f/2.8.
What I find more interesting is that Tamron says that "development" has begun, yet they plan to begin shipping before the end of 2012. Wow -- that sounds very fast.

Read more below.

Product Features

• One special XLD (Extra Low Dispersion)(5) glass in concert with four LD (Low Dispersion) elements minimize chromatic aberrations. This combined with a new optical design that delivers high contrast and high resolution throughout the zoom range achieves leading-edge image quality.

• Tamron’s advanced multi-layer coating technology dramatically improves lens performance by reducing flare and ghosting for crisper, clearer images.

• The rounded diaphragm(6) affords the photographer spectacular blur effects, delivering the kind of rich expression only achievable with a high-speed telephoto zoom lens.

(1) For high-speed telephoto zoom lenses for full-size SLR cameras, equipped with VC image stabilization and USD. Current as of September 2012. (Source: Tamron)
(2) VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization mechanism.
(3) USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) is Tamron's proprietary ultrasonic motor drive.
(4) The Sony mount does not include VC, as Sony digital SLR bodies include image stabilization functionality. The Sony lens is designated as “SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di USD”
(5) The XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) glass is made from specialized high-grade glass, which offers greater chromatic aberration correction properties than LD (Low Dispersion) elements.
(6) This rounded diaphragm retains a nearly circular shape even when taken two stops down from its fully open state.

• The most compact full-size, high-speed telephoto zoom lens with VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) in its class delivers superior mobility, enabling photographers to capture the previously unattainable.

• Features USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) to power a speedy AF drive together with a continuous manual focus mechanism.

• The VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization mechanism reduces camera shake to deliver sharp images.

• Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens.

Another new 18-270? Didn't they just come out with the PZD version a year ago?

I'm thinking this new 70-200 VC can be a good seller if it's as good as Canon's version 1, but yet be maybe half the price.

From what I understand, their Non VC version is a good performer.
Just a thought.

I'll put my money on that it will be quite a bit better than the Canon IS version I optically speaking and has better stabilization.

The Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 OS is already what you're describing ;) The Tamron needs to be better to sell well or be cheaper.

Yeah, the 70-200 VC came up a few months ago, along with the 90 macro VC. I suspect it will be very good and give consumers another option in the 70-200 range. Their VC is amazing and I would suspect it to be a lot like the 24-70VC in quality...and also price.

Does the sigma have FTM and weather sealing? The tamron 24-70 does, and so does the 70-200 VC , so that would be an upgrade.

this is exactly what i've been waiting for. i will be purchasing as soon as it hits shelves. optically speaking, i've always held that the tamron 70-200 f2.8 was/is optically superior to canons 70-200 2.8 mk1. canons USM and IS completely negate the price difference however...hopefully this tamron lense is just as optically sound as the original.

why wouldn't you just get the sigma 70-200OS though? it's supposed to be better than the 70-200 f2.8 mk I already...and it's available, and cheaper...unless this lens comes in ridiculously cheap, i feel like it's really nothing that hasn't been seen before...

This is very interesting, I have the original Tamron 70-200, and yes it's optically excellent. AF sucks something major though.

Sounds interesting, but.. although the aperture blades are rounded, i think they dropped the ball by only including 6 blades!

Dammit..put 7, 8, or 9 blades, and charge $50 more.. it will be worth it!
