I'm currently shooting with a 5D classic for studio shots, automotive photography and landscapes. I use my 40D mostly as a backup but would like to photograph birds more as well as get back to taking photos at Road America. The prices on the 5D MkII are very tempting right now but I keep wondering with the more I learn about the 5D MkIII if it would work for everything I shoot. If I bought a MkII at the current pricing, I could probably pick it and a good condition 7D up for less than the MkIII body alone.

Your call, but there are several threads where this has already been discussed. This is one, there are others as well.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Your current setup seems fine for what you want to shoot. What is it that you want to gain by upgrading?

My hope was to give my wife the 5D classic for the times we go out to shoot landscapes and scenery. I know I ran into some focus issues with that camera when taking photos at a wedding last weekend but I'm not sure if the Mark III would have done better. I think that for 90 percent of what I do the older focus system is okay. I do realize that for the times I shoot auto racing, airshows or wildlife that the 40D should be fine. I may just get a MK II at the lower price with another 24-105 and save for a lens with more reach and possibly a 17-40 for shooting cars.

Thanks for the links and thoughts on this.:)

I started a thread a few days ago which was similar. With the new 6D coming out I was thinking. 7D and 6D or 5DMKIII. Basically the same amount of money. Good luck with your decision. It's not an easy one to make. I'm still on the fence although I must say that having test shot the MKIII for the first time the other day I was very impressed and quite smitten with the it. It's an awesome looking an functioning body.

I have 5D2 and 7D. Very happy with what I have. I wouldn't want to have just one body. Depends on what you need. For me this was ideal setup and financially made sense. Very different cameras with diferent purposes.

I have a 7d and will eventually buy a 5d mark ii or iii(i hope). I would prefer the newer iii but if that meant the 7d had to go i won't get it. For me the combo of a crop and ff is an easy choice over just a ff

I have both the 60D and 7D...had the 5DMKII.

I sold the 5DII when I was offered a good sum of $$$ for it and thought I would be doing mainly bird/sports photography....and wanted the advantage of the 1.6 crop factor that the 60D/7D provides.

Recently, I had the chance to shoot with a 5DMKII again this time for landscapes and rediscovered how nice a job that large sensor does on low light and landscapes.

To go back to a FF is going to cost. I've been vascillating between the 5DMKII, 5DMKIII and the D600/lens and am not sure what I'm going to do.

Most likely, I'll get a 5DMKII for the time being and use that until I can figure out what to do next....wonder if it's going to come down further in price(from $1,799)??

I really like what I see in the D600 both in functiion and price but don't want to change systems. To my way of thinking the Canon 6D is coming out a lame duck compared to the D600..so not much interest there...maybe I'll change my mind on that after some reviews...who knows?

The 5DMKIII is a good camera but IMHO, significantly overpriced. If I go the 5DMKIII route I will either have to (1) just bite the bullet and live with buying at this high cost or (2) wait a year or two until the MKIII comes in line price wise.

Had the 5DMKIII come out under $3K, I probably would have bought it.

Oh well....

I just sold my 7D after a 3 year love affair with it. I enjoy shooting sports and wildlife but the past few years have been modeling portfolios and landscapes. I primarily use 17-40mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. I was always frustrated I could not get the FF and kept having to adjust my shooting position. I went with the MK III because I think it seems to be a good balance of speed while still having FF capabilities. Not to mention the new AF system. I hope my decision was wise, the MK III as pricy so I doubt I will be buying another camera for at least 3 more years regardless what new bells and whistles Canon comes up with.

I would get the 5DII and a new prime lens(35mm or 50mm maybe?)if i were you. Seems to be a better deal considering what you shoot. The 5DII is a beast of a camera, and unless you need the better AF then it makes sense to me to go for the 5DII + a prime as that will open a lot of possibilities that you just don't have at the moment.

If you are serious about taking more pictures of birds and other fast moving subjects, the 5DIII is the one to get.

Thanks everyone for your input. Definitely much to think about. I truly wish that the Mk III would be at a lower price as that would make a decision much easier.
